19550768 No.19550768 [Reply] [Original]

Going to finally read the bible, need to buy one first though. Should I go for a big study bible on my first read? Or just purely read scripture and form my own thoughts on the first go?

>> No.19550770

>>19550768
You couldn’t possibly form your owns thoughts because you’ve already been influenced by current Christian theology. Good luck.

I read it in full this year. I sort of wished I would have read one with more common language than KJV because I'm a midwit but I wouldn't recommend a study bible. I think you should just read it.

Get a Study Bible and a 365-day reading plan. My biggest regret was reading straight from Genesis to Revelation, first page to last page. If you don't want the reading plan method, then at least start with the NT, then do the OT, then reread the NT. Starting with the OT and trying to go straight through is how you get filtered by Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

Thanks for the advice, I was planning on doing Genesis to Revelation. I will do this instead. Which translation did you read?

is bibleposting the hot new /lit/ meme

Pic related is the current academic consensus bible, and they also have the Oxford Annotated Bible Commentary to read alongside it. So if you want the current scholarly understanding of the bible, this is it.

That said it has some political/theological controversies attached to it (conservatives/evangelicals don't like it for reasons) but overall if you want to be truly biblepilled you have to read multiple versions anyway.

Well, if you're wanting to read the Bible in English then there is literally no choice. To positively identify a Holy Bible look for it to say "Authorized King James", and be sure it absolutely does not say "New" before "King James". Many producers include "Version" after "King James", but this is a misnomer as there are no "versions" of the Holy Bible. If you want to rest in total assurance then Church Bible Publishers is your source for an Authorized King James Bible of the Pure Cambridge Edition.

If it's your first time you want a pleasurable literary read. Go KJV or Robert Alter Old Testament + David Bentley Hart New Testament.
Alter's Hebrew Bible is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, if you're christian adjacent/interested I'd recommend reading Genesis first, then the New Testament, then dipping in and out of the Old Testament as a compendium instead of a linear narrative, if you just go cover to cover the hebrew genealogy can get muddled together and you won't have the time to really savor Ketuvim.

>there are no "versions" of the Holy Bible
Yes there are. There’s the Geneva version of the bible, the King James Version of the Bible, the New King James Version of the Bible, the New International Version of the Bible, the English standard version of the bible, etc etc. Any time the bible is translated it is a version. You’re obviously not suggesting that the Bible was written first in English, so any English translation, including your beloved king James, is still a translated “version”.

The Bible wasn’t first written in English because that language didn’t exist in that state until several hundred years after the Norman conquests of England. The Bible was written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek. Do your homework. It’s actually astonishing to me that I have to tell you this. The KJV was a TRANSLATION of what had already been written in other languages, and no, the Greek etc writers did not have Jacobean English in mind while they wrote their pieces.

Not an atheist
If God wanted the bible to be one specific form of English why did he wait thousands of Judeo Christian history to bring that to fruition? Instead he risked the souls of all his followers by allowing them to wallow in incorrect translations and false tongues until the proper language could come around in the 1600s. How is it to the glory of his church to give them the wrong language and doctrine all along? Fucking retard

Why did *He* wait thousands of Judeo history before coming as Christ? Are (You) leaning unto thine own pathetic understanding?

I wouldn't commit to a full on study bible until you know for sure that you are even fully into it. Although if you have no former religious knowledge the extra information might paint a better picture for you. As for translations, you will end up reading multiple versions eventually, but for me the NKJV strikes the perfect balance of language, accuracy, and readability.

Get a KJB and good one or two volume commentary. Study Bibles are memes and your KJB will be your Scripture while commentaries can come and go according to taste, need, and knowledge. The Moody one is a really good one volume.

>> No.19556166

>>19556148
IMO reference is essential, it shows you other relevant or supporting verses, cross references, "hyperlinks". There are many that aren't listed, but what is there is far better than no references. It's usually fruitful to check Bible Hub for more on verses you think to be particularly interesting.

I tried reading the bible. Genesis is like a Monty Python comedy.

> Jacob and his wife are traveling through strange lands
> he tells Sara, his wife, "I don't want anyone to murder me and marry you, so just tell them you're my sister."
> the Pharaoh sees Sara, thinks she's hot, and bangs her
> God pops out of nowhere and says "REEEEE DON'T FUCK JACOB'S WIFE"
> the next day, pharaoh tells Jacob, "hey dude, why didn't you just tell me she was your wife?"
> fast forward 50 years
> Jacob and Sara go traveling again, he tells her to say she's his sister AGAIN, and she gets fucked by some king AGAIN
> only this time she's 70 years old
> God pops out once more and says REEEEE
> the random king tells Jacob the same thing as pharaoh, basically, "bro I wouldn't have fucked her if I knew she was your wife"

Jewish mythology is retarded and gay.
