Hey guys

I'm thinking of getting an e-reader, mostly because for space and practicality reasons. I have a few questions for those of you who have one.

Which is the best one to look at? As far as I've heard Kindles are the best all in all.

Is it possible to use "pirated" books on them? I've heard that kindles delete unverified ebooks, or something like that?

If it is possible, are there proper sources for collections (Discworld, for example).

I'm also a bit worried about the lack of colour. I know it's a bit petty, but I like having the covers.

Any other issues or experiences that a first-time buyer should be aware of? Thanks!

What about formats? Is PDF and mobi the best, in terms of being structured properly? With word documents it could just be a shitload of text, not organised properly with paragraphs and spacing and so on.

Wait till Christmas. They don't have a release schedule as strict as Apple, but it is usually around Christmas that they release new crap. Colored e-ink is a rumor, and if not they might announce a price drop.

I have an original Kindle andeven it is great. Looking for an upgrade though, so Christmas it is.

I've been looking into e-readers as well, and I have decided that I will get a Kobo Touch next month.

FFFUUUU... My ass is itching for one now, but I suppose it's better to wait.

What made you decide on that one?

Price, supports every format, it's fast, and you can use memory cards.

Why would you need colored e-ink?

In most of my books, the ink is black.

color has never been a problem for me
and idk about legit sources other then B&N online i usually just use demonoid

How does the kindle organise the stuff you put on it?

Does it have an alphabetic list of authors with surnames first, or can you rename the files and it sorts it according to that?

>> No.1954244

>>1954243
You can choose.
I have it sorted alphabetically by author.

>> No.1954250

>>1954244
But where does it get the name from? The filename or metadata?

Also, how many books do you guys actually get on the kindle, because the 3500 they advertise doesn't really mean anything. I suppose it depends which format the books are in, because from what I can see mobi and prc are small as fuck, but pdf's can get pretty big.

I'm afraid I'm gonna run out of space.

>> No.1954251

Got Kindle 3G and downloaded Calibre + ABBYY Finereader 10 for scans few months ago. Easy and quick format convertion. Never looked back to paper books. Looking forward to new generation.

can you annotate pdfs on the kindle?

>> No.1954537

Yea I have a kindle and downloaded 10000 books from demonoid. It's pretty pretty easy to pirate books. You just take the .mobi file and put it into the documents folder in your kindle. It can't do pdfs for all i know.

>> No.1954553

3G sure recognizes PDFs but its highly uncomfortable to read. Converting (even scanned) PDF to .mobi is very easy with Calibre (2 clicks).

>> No.1954588

Get the Kindle 3, it's got a great price for this kind of functionality. Also, the warranty is awesome - when I broke the screen on mine by falling asleep on it they sent me a new one after a call to support and checking the serial number in their database.

Also, geting pirate books is very easy. mobi and prc files work right away, epub is easily converted by Calibre, but stay away from pdfs unless you get a Kindle DX - you have to scroll over 9000 times to read an A4 page on the small screen of the usual one.

>> No.1954595

Is there any point in a Kindle 3G? I intend to pirate almost all of my books, so I'm struggling to justify spending the extra 50 quid.

it's not worth it unless you plan on travelling abroad A LOT and you need something to check your email on.
The browser is pretty shitty and you won't be buying much on the Amazon, so 3G ain't worth it.
Look into the ad-displaying Kindles, though. You get them cheaper and the screensaver hack takes about 3 minutes to install - no more ads on the lockscreen.

the screensaver hack doesn't work on the Kindle SO (new firmware), but you don't see the lockscreenn so much if you use a cover (which you totally should have - the screens are very fragile and the Kindle 3 is way too thin to hold comfortably in one hand).

Also, there's a hidden image viever and the screen is sharp enough to read manga on easily, you just need to rescale it to a proper resolution beforehand.

>> No.1954660

Don't go with the Kindle if you want to pirate books.
You can just as easily find epubs.

I recommend either the Kobo or the new Touch Nook.
They both:
>Are priced exactly the same
>Are very lightweight
>Support reading as the main utility
>Have a touch screen
>Have the newest, high contrast screen

Don't expect to read PDFs on them (it's a 6 inch screen).

>> No.1954667

Just use your iPad

>> No.1954669

>>1954660
if you pirate your books, you'd want to organise them using calibre and if you do that you can make it convert them for the Kindle.
also
>touchscreen
>e-reader
I want to have a screen WITHOUT fingerprints everywhere.
>lightweight
K3 weighs about the half of your smartphone's weight and is thin as fuck.
>reading as the main use
well, duh.
>high contrast screen
Kindle's screen is wonderful compared to the Sony PRS-500 I had for some time. The Sony was using grayscale, while Kindle has a really black black and very light gray as white, so reading is easy on it.
Also, dem page turn buttons. The placement is genius.

>> No.1954871

>>1954669

Also, I put my Kindle in a quart freezer bag to read in the hot tub and on the beach; doing that without physical page–turn buttons would suck.

>> No.1955267

So pdf's are a bitch to read on the kindle? If you convert them to .mobi will the formatting stay the same? Like the covers, chapters and paragraph structures and so on?

Also, to echo what someone asked earlier, how many books do you guys actually get on the kindles, because them advertising 3500 is really pointless. It's like shops that advertise iPods saying you can get x amount of songs on there, conveniently ignoring the different bitrates, song lengths etc.

>> No.1955475

>>1954173

>Is it possible to use "pirated" books on them? I've heard that kindles delete unverified ebooks, or something like that?
Every book on my kindle is pirated--all 300 of them.

>>1955267
1. If the PDFs are vector they'll convert without any formatting issues.
2. I had 1300 on mine but annotating became an arduous process with that amount (lag and freezing issues). I currently have 300 on there without any lag.

>> No.1956669

>>1955267
pdf's made of images take about a month for a page turn.
but seriously, most of them are made for A4 paper size and they need to be scrolled 3 times per page on the Kindle, so unless you reflow them onto A5 or smaller page size and upsize the font you'll be mighty pissed before you read a single book in pdf.
Just try to get epubs or mobi wherever possible and convert with calibre everything else.

I have a kindle, and I absolutely love to use it.
It is comfortable to use, not heavy or too big, it is organized and easy to use. The screen is great, very easy on the eyes. I can read for hours w/out my eyes feeling sore.

Yes you can pirate books. The way I do it, I usually download the epub version of a book, then convert it using "calibre" to the kindle format, then use the program to send the file to the device. It is very easy to pirate books with it. None of my pirated books have been erased from it, and I always have the wifi on it on, and I have bought books from the amazon kindle store.

>> No.1956696

>>1956686
there's also the amazon's file conversion/delivery service. if you really need to get something on the kindle and don't have the cable, just send the file via email, turn the WiFi on and download it.
Pirating books works too, but you can only send 10 or so books per email.

they are great if, and only if, all you want to do ti read. if you want to cruise the internet spend the money on a iPad or windows pad. the kindle application is available for most phones as well.

for pirated books there are conversion tools out there.

there are a couple in color but the blk and wht has worked fine for me so far, even on specific images and covers.

Good things to have for the Kindle

Kindle Collection Manager - for sorting/organizing your kindle:
http://www.colegate.net/KindleCollectionManager/

Calibre - for converting to .mobi AND organization on your computer. It works wonderfully as a library.
http://calibre-ebook.com/

This torrent for books (I have dl'ed this one):
http://www.demonoid.me/files/details/2661222/01546993158/

Newer one with more (looks iffy, have not downloaded)
http://www.demonoid.me/files/details/2683385/03867482895/

Then of course, the sites in the sticky, specifically the IRC ones.

.azw works even better if you see it for download. .azw is kindle's propriatary format and an off-shoot of .mobi

>>1956701
Oh, and for the torrent, you can just import it into Calibre as a library, and bam, instant library with all books having complete metadata and covers. I'm referring to the first torrent.

Calibre can also transfer books to the Kindle if you so desire, as well as tell you all of what's on there.

It's really quite useful in general.
