Why was the movie so fucking gray?
It should have been a clusterfuck of color clashing against Humbert's melodrama.

That's how stuff works in real life.

A distant cousin of mine and I grew up together. He's a very empathetic and kind person while I am a somewhat unkind and rough person who naturally distrusts people. People sometimes tell me I'm an asshole. This past year, my cousin's father was convicted of child molestation and sent to prison. Several weeks later my cousin's mother died of cancer. My cousin and his wife have also been attempting to have children for some time, but his wife keeps miscarriaging.

The point I'm trying to make here is that terrible things happen all the time, and they happen to decent, kind people. If life were fair, these terrible things should have been placed on my shoulders, not my cousin's, since I am the stronger and more rough of the two of us—but it didn't. There's no rhyme or reason to these things. Nabokov understood this.
