>him being retarded
Wow its almost like he's an actual person with flaws.
All his actions have realistic and catastrophic consequences down the road
> Keeps pushing his friend away while ostensibly causing both his love interests to die without explaining anything to him
> gets betrayed and stabbed by that friend
> Ally with someone everyone warns is a madman who will betray him just because Darrow thinks he's useful.
> Gets betrayed and rekt at his moment of triumph
> Commits genocide on an allied faction to weaken them
> warcrimes get found out a decade later and they come to kick his shit in at his lowest point
There aren't that many Golds. Only 40 million in a solar system with like 18 billion people in it, which is a tiny percentage.
Obviously you didn't read the series because then you'd know there ARE color revolts and they get completely crushed every time.
Anyway do you really expect non-obsidian castes to revolt? None of them are built for combat, and no single color can effectively rebel since the Society is constructed such that every caste is needed to function.

Yeah, I don't really get the complaint of Darrow being a Gary Stew when he constantly fucks shit up. He's OP when it comes to fighting or leading combat but then kind of shit otherwise.

Also on Dark Age:

I really hope Fa is more interesting than just a slave to the Fear Night. The outer belt Obsidians seem scary as fuck, but if they are just part of the Society then the story doesn't shift much. I'm hoping it will be more of a four way war between the Belt, the Republic, the Society remnant, and the Obsidian. Would be nice to see Atalantia actually killed by her supposed pet. Also, cannot fucking wait for the inevitable Darrow versus Fa throw down.

Shit, now that I think of it, are there five factions with the Jackel? Plus the Ref Hand as a minor one?

Was very pleased Lyria chapters got good again too.

It's stupid because his greatest blunders come after getting his shit kicked in and crawling back to the top.

I know that the entire system is trying to ape the Roman society. But the Roman society was pretty good to it's citizens. The Republic had ample opportunity for social ascension.

>>19514669
It's not that he's a Gary Stu. It's that most times he fucked up, it was after him resolving himself. Fuck, the third book "twist" even plays on this.

>> No.19514696

That's way too much of a clusterfuck to be convincingly resolved in one book.
My prediction is that
The whole solar system's gonna collapse into planetary nation states. The protagonists' dream of democracy straight up doesn't work, and there's hints of planetary nationalism at the end of Dark Age. Lysander's probably going to fracture the Society remnants in a civil war once he finds out how truly degenerate the inner-system Golds are and what they did to his family and love interest. Darrow's likely going to die after crushing his enemies, leaving every faction is complete ruins such that every planet's going to secede and have their own government.

How is this a criticism? The higher he reaches, the more spectacular his fall is. In any case, he doesn't ever make the same mistake twice, he always learns from them. It's just that his enemies are actually competent and keep finding new ways to beat him despite him being basically Alexander the Great reborn.
What's the fuckup in the third book? If you're referring to the false flag attack, it wasn't really a blunder, it was a calculated move on his part that didn't really pan out in the long-term.

I love how the example of rim's 'honor' actually shows their hypocrisy since even though they claim a 1v1 is honorable, there was no way Cassius would have been able to win against an endless number of challengers. Even the 'honorable' Rim is still degenerate at its core. Its ironic how the only true Iron Golds seem to be Darrow, a red, and Cassius, a broken homeless man.

I'm gonna do it. I'll write another book. This one's going to be adult fantasy. I won't use the word grunted for every other dialogue tag like the lately popular Mr. Gwynne. In terms of pure, solid surprise, the end of Golden Sun is by far and away the best though.

There were millions of robots spread throughout a multi system empire slaving away
400 years later humanity invents a conscious self aware and very advanced robot and after demonstrations of the fact that it feels, is conscious, has emotions, etc humanity decides to elevate it's rights to that of humanity essentially
Now there are thousands of these conscious robots, what do they think about the millions of robot slaves? Do they sympathise with them? Do they exist as a reminder of how precarious their position is to the robots or do they simply not care and embrace the robot labour force as being something which they will benefit from?

Gotta agree with the NPR review of it:

"From far away, Suriel watched a rain of orange lightning fall across the eastern hemisphere of the planet, scorching it to bare rock in seconds. Dull gray vessels drifted away, bearing most of the people and objects of any significance.

Around the planet, war raged.

Vroshir defended their ships’ retreat with protective workings, barriers, guardian beasts the size of moons, and shields that could block exploding stars.

Abidan attacked to seize the ships, lances of blue as they drew on the Way to reinforce their attacks with absolute authority. But it was too late; millions had died in the planetary barrage, and the Iteration’s relationship to the Way was weak.

Color-swirling portals bloomed in front of the ships as they prepared to leave through the Void.

Drifting in endless sapphire light outside the Iteration, Suriel tapped into her mantle and reverted the world towards a state of order."

The moments when the world is sealed don't exist on the outside, the God's can't percieve it at all. To them it's just like there's discontinuity in time, first it's before the No-God, then immediately after it, nothing inbetween.
But all other moments exist at once. So if Kellhus plans to become a God, he'll have to die while the world is unsealed, and would presumably already exist even before his own death. This means the MOST IMPORTANT THING is that he CANNOT allow himself to die while the No-God is active! Given the extreme danger in Golgoterroth, with all the Consult and Dunyain sorcerors, it's impossible for him to trust his ability to ensure his life there. So the instant the No-God was about to be activated he had to immediately die as fast as possible, i.e. be salted by a chorae.

Assuming his plan is the simple and obvious "become a ciphrang and then have all my followers worship me to become a god" then the best possible outcome is for all the other gods to be DEAD! As in, he plans to go outside, seal the world, kill EVERYONE except his own worshippers, then UNSEAL the world and be the Solitary God. So he needs to play both sides at once. If the Consult loses, then the world will never be sealed and he'll be drowned out by an army of White Luck Warriors while attempting to exterminate all opposing cults. But if the Consult wins, they'll NEVER unseal the world, and certainly will never worship a ciphrang.
He needs to, in order
>amass a large militant cult capable of defeating the consult
>have the consult be forced to activate the No-God
>have his followers/the consult kill everyone else besides his personal cult
>have his personal cult destroy the consult and deactivate the No-God

Remember that as of the end, barring the consult, ALL SORCERERS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD FOLLOW HIM AND ALL RELIGIOUS CULTS ARE CUT OFF FROM THEIR GODS AND POWERLESS!

I recently found a few old fantasy books from the 80s at the used book store. They have half-naked people on them and look like they'd be schlock, but they've all been surprisingly good. I've always avoided stuff from the 80s because I assumed it would be generic conan ripoffs without any unique qualities, but I was wrong.
Anyone have some recommendations from that era? The authors I've read and enjoyed were Louise Cooper, Roger Zelazny and John Varley. I also read the first few books of Gor a long time ago and thought it was surprisingly well-written, if the world was a bit strange at times, with random talking sentient creatures and what-not.

Need some input here, for those who have read Joe Abercrombie:

Would you recommend "The Heroes" as the first book to read to somebody who doesn't read much fantasy?

I want to introduce a friend of mine into the First Law series and I know that he would love it for the military fantasy aspects alone.
The first book might be a bit too drawn out to get him hooked and Red Country/Sharp ends cointain too many spoilers, especially with the Logen arcs.

The Heroes seems to be disconnected enough from the main characters arcs of First Law, so I thought it would be a good introduction into the world and the general tone of First law without spoiling too much.

Seen that opinion a few times, cannot understand why. Player of Games was IMO the most bland and boring of the Culture books, while Consider Phlebas had really interesting ideas in it (though maybe a little too much edge). Excession is probably my favorite one, along with Use of Weapons.

Yes, IIRC it has more explanation on what the Culture is, how it works etc. The other books expect you to know such things or figure them out from context.
> Is Use of Weapons set during the same time?
The Culture is a massive galaxy-spanning civilization. The main character of one book appears for a bit in another one, but otherwise there's almost no character or event overlap beyond background references. The stories are separated by hundreds of years.

You may want to check out the sequel series Tad Williams is writing to Memory Sorrow and Thorn, then, because it implies the ending to it is far from happy, with the Norns winding up on a near-genocidal retaliation from the humans.

Other than that, the only successful genocide I can think of in fantasy is in Malazan Book of the Fallen, but it's not really anything close to the main plot of the story and reading it just for that would be like reading the Bible for a handful of scenes where it talks about incest.

I think you have something right, but the One God is clearly something alien and different. Kellhus talks to Proyas about It. There is no possible way for a limited being to become It. If I had to guess where the ideas were going based on the philosophers they recall, my guess would be that Kellhus's gambit is to remove the gods to allow for the longer term evolution of sentience towards the Absolute, the sum of all being, actual and potential. This as juxtaposed with the No God, which is more the being for itself of Sartre.

The unmoving now of the outside, the tyranny of its malevolent beings, is a barrier to the summation of all historical moments building towards Absolute Knowing. This real, if transcendental Hell, must be sublated.

Or if he goes a more Gnostic route, the goal might be to let souls re-enter the Pleroma of all possibilities instead of being trapped.

>> No.19520603

>>19520558
Better fantasy writers at least shy away from topics they don't know a lot about. Abercrombie seems to relish in using vocabulary he evidently does not understand. The experience of reading Abercrombie with a background in military history is like an engineer watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXJKdh1KZ0w except you know it isn't a joke with Abercrombie. I've read plenty of authors who obviously did not know a lot about war, but do you know how they usually handled war? They didn't write about it in detail. They avoided involving the plot or characters too deeply in scenes that would depend on describing military command structures, formations, tactics, and large scale battle. If only Abercrombie did the same.

>> No.19520640

>>19520603
Also, for the record, I think Abercrombie writes good characters. His political intrigue and personal drama are compelling enough to stand on their own as the meat of the story. If he'd let the war loom in the background instead of trying to wade into it like a toddler into a riptide and with similar results I would probably have high praise for his books. As is though I have to warn anybody getting into them that they're going to be subjected to utter military nonsense, if military fantasy is something they look for.

>> No.19520808

Presumably if Kellhus becomes a God he'll either instantly grasp the absolute, instantly witness the moment some one else in the far future reaches it, or he'll have to conclude it's either never reached or happens while the world is sealed. It was already difficult to imagine his motivations before, now it's effectively impossible.

Now that I’m reading the God Emperor, I’m getting so much deja vus from The Second Apocalypse. The pic related is a page from The God Emperor of Dune so it might contain spoilers

Just google The Second Apocalypse by R. Scott Bakker and you’ll find there are seven books and the series starts with The Darkness That Comes Before. You’ll find the books in your local library, kindle, bookshops, or you can pirate the books from the SFF thread in /t/. If you like the books please consider buying a physical copy to thank Mr. Bakker.

I cant remember the title of the books in a series and am too dumb to find it via google.

Author was a psychologist.

Earth is not multiplanetary, a small science expedition tests a new drive gets stranded on an alien biome. Due to limited resources the ship is sent home with one crew member, a girl and two guys stay behind. They produce an inbred civilization. Starts out matriarchal but that mostly flips later on with a bunch of strife and shit. History language and culture get corrupted along with a mythos about the founding woman and prophecies about people coming to collect them and take them to paradise.

Earth goes into war and recession, hundreds of years pass before a new expedition is sent, everyone presumed all the humans left behind were long sense dead.

There are these tree like structures that spew steam, and alien animals that get domesticated and mountains. Everything is dark.

Please help, I'm retarded but want to know the name of the series.

Kindle unlimited is frequently a loss leader. Amazon pays out $0.005 per page view no matter how many pages a particular customer reads.

Authors publishing on kindle books for sale get 35% of the sale price. They have the option to bump that to 70% of the sale price if they sell the book between $2.99 and $9.99, enable all the kindle features, and sign a contract not to list the book on any other site for a lower price than what they list it on amazon for.

Let's say an author is selling a 500 page book.
If they sell it for $10 on amazon they get $3.50, if they sell it for $9.99 they could get $7.99.

Maybe the hype is gone and now they want to sell it for $1.00 to capture more market share, they now only get $0.35 per sale. If they bump it up to $2.99 they could capture $2.00 of that but perhaps it's only a hundred page book and customers are hesitant to pay that much so the author is in a tough spot.

Each person reading the 500 page book on Kindle unlimited gets them $2.50, they legit get more money for letting people read the book for "free" than they would selling it for $2.99 each. And they will likely find significantly more readers.

If you read more than 2,000 pages per month amazon looses money on kindle unlimited. My peak months have been around 45,000. That's more than $200 out of Bezos's pocket into the pockets of authors.

KU algorithmic rankings reward authors that publish at least once every two months. And they pay out based on number of page views with little to no regard to actual quality. This leads to shorter books in long series that are just good enough to keep the pages turning. I am somewhat split on weather it's over all a good thing or not.

This website was created for non Japanese men to pretend like they are little Japanese girls and talk to other men who are likewise pretending to be little Japanese girls.

What kind of weirdo would come and hang out in a place like this and then pretend like it's unusual and unwelcome when the site is used for it's intended behavior. I think you should re-evaluate the life decisions that bring you here.
