I've attached a very interesting "review" of Teresa of Avila's major works by a 19th century Scottish Protestant, Whyte -- an unlikely admirer, but an admirer nonetheless.

Whyte's remarks has inspired me to read St. Teresa's Letters and Foundations, which really hadn't been on my radar.

I would also recommend to you Sr. Faustina's Divine Mercy in My Soul, and Therese of Lisieux's Story of a Soul. Both are truly inspired and inspiring. Quite different in tone and style from Augustine, yet what the authors have in common is a remarkable gift for conveying in a clear and illuminating way the subtleties and nuances of the spiritual life -- indeed, the *reality* of that side of life.

General thread for discussing all literature related to the one, holy, Catholic and apostolic church. Post your current reads, recommendation requests, and questions here.

[!] Reminder that the Eastern Catholic churches are currently in the second week of the Nativity Fast (also called St. Phillip's Fast). If you wish to deepen your prayer life and discipline, it is a very edifying practice to join along, even if starting late. Let us remember to be charitable, friendly, loving, humble, and patient - not just to our fellow Catholics, but to the Protestants, Eastern Orthodox, Hindus, atheists/agnostics/skeptics, and Buddhists who may enter this thread.
"The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying one another." (Gal. 5:19-26)

You should really read anything from the Spanish Ascetic School, poems like the Night is Dark from San Juan de La cruz or the Spiritual Exercises from Loloya. In my opinion this School on of the best things Spain did in a cultural way.

That's exactly what its about. Augustine was scandalous before his conversion--- even had an unplanned pregnancy out of wedlock. If that's still a scandal today, you can imagine how people viewed him then.

The confessions are deeply moving and an emotional shock. A beautiful portrait of the repentant soul. However I will tell you that after a lot of searching, nothing can ever create a Christian except faith. There is no amount of rationalizing and reading you can do to "make" you into a Christian. This is the hard truth I learned after being raised Catholic but leaving as a youth. Books like these help and can inform the soul, but your own earthmoving faith that God is who he says he is will be what saves you.

Hildegard von Bingen, who is one of 36 saints designated Doctor Ecclesiae Universalis (Doctor of the Church), that is a saint who has been deemed to have contributed directly to canonical catholic teaching. Namely her 3 "divine works:
Scivias ("Know the Ways", composed 1142–1151), Liber Vitae Meritorum ("Book of Life's Merits" or "Book of the Rewards of Life", composed 1158–1163); and Liber Divinorum Operum ("Book of Divine Works", also known as De operatione Dei, "On God's Activity", composed 1163/4 to 1172 or 1174).
