What does /lit/ think of R. Scott Bakker and his Second Apocalypse books? I read them a while ago and found them quite fascinating.

His books were heavily infused with philosophy, especially the first three books. I'm a total noob when it comes to philosophy, and many times I scratched my head and had to reread some passages, but it was invigorating and unique nonetheless. I don't think many books exist in the fantasy genre that are so heavy on philosophy.

The strongest point are the characters though, their trials and inner dialogue. I have seldom read a character as deep as Drusas Achamian (annoying as he might be from time to time).

Unfortunately that might also be the reason why it never was very successful or caught on with the usual fantasy demographic. Bakker even had to go back to teaching, which is delaying the sixth book even more.

The premise in itself is nothing that special, it's heavily borrowed from the crusades. Wiki explains it better than me:

"It depicts the story of the Holy War launched by the Inrithi kingdoms against the heathen Fanim of the south to recover the holy city of Shimeh for the faithful. During the war, a man named Anasûrimbor Kellhus emerges from obscurity to become an exceptionally powerful and influential figure, and it is discovered that the Consult, an alliance of forces united in their worship of the legendary No-God, a nihilistic force of destruction, are manipulating events to pave the way for the No-God's return to the mortal world." (spoilers after that)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._Scott_Bakker

Have you read it and what do you think? I recommend it to anyone interested in fantasy, even if you are not that into philosophy.

pic: Faces on covers of fantasy books usually puts me off and I wouldn't even bother picking that book up, but in this case I'm glad I did. There are other covers though without face, this is the one I've got.

I've only read the first three, they were written very well but honestly I've never read anything more graphic. The weird sexual scenes get to be a little too much. That part at the end of book two or whichever it was when the demon thing basically rapes an entire tribe of people was probably the most grotesque thing I've ever read.

Other than that I loved the books. They have such incredibly powerful and beautifully written scenes; Achamian being overpowered by the Scarlet Spires sorcerers, Seswatha facing down the Gnosis, Achamian's student's death, and when his other student is writing the letter to the religious leader when he thought Achamian was dead all come to mind. There are a lot of killer lines in there too for me (Sun after burning sun set upon him; Your god is not a god; What price would you pay? Any price; No soul moves alone; They poured out their Holy Water etc.) I read those books a year ago and still remember how well written they were. I also love the portrayal of religion, politics, etc. It all feels so unreal and yet believable. All in all great books, wish they were a little less graphic.

Blood of an Exile, Dragons of Terra #1 - Brian Naslund (2019)

Blood of an Exile is primarily about an unlikely group attempting to fulfill a suicidal royal quest. Aside from that, there's more focus on ecology than you'd probably expect. There's also a bit about the initial development of magic. Over the course of the book it increasingly becomes more of a power fantasy, which isn't something that I mind, though there were better alternatives. This is satisfying in a visceral way.

There are five viewpoint characters. I enjoyed them all, in this order: apothecary, assassin, dragonslayer, budding ecofascist princess, kunoichi. I had hoped that the apothecary would have a prominent role, but he had far less chapters than I wanted. Maybe he'll feature more in rest of the trilogy. I hope so anyway. I'll be reading the two remaining books in relatively short order.

The dragons in this are of the beast variety and there many different types of them. They're not the modern western fantasy sort of dragon. Considering how different they are, dragon seems more like a catch-all term for a certain type of beast. However, they all share two common traits. That their oil is extremely valuable and that their presence is essential to the ecosystem.

The biggest problem with this book is that all its disparate elements don't quite come together. There are so many strangely used allusions that it becomes distracting. The quality is so uneven and unbalanced that I wondered about its editing process. I found my footing though and enjoyed myself anyway. Fun provides an amazing set of blinders.

The killings are more graphically described than what I usually read in fantasy. There's a significant body count by the end from the viewpoint characters alone. There was a surprisingly recurrent focus on bodily waste. It was rather noticeable and I wonder what Naslund's intentions were. Also, there's sex, which is presented in a way I assume the author thought was sensual, yet classy, and maybe even romantic. One other thing of particular note to me was how often the chapters started with a character waking up.

Naslund's bio reads: "usually griping about video games on Twitter" which lends credence to what I see as a videogame geography problem. It's one of several weird issues that depending on the person would range in severity from trivial to dealbreaker. For me, it was moderately annoying. There's no gradation between locations, or really any sense to the world. Another one of these issues is his naming sense. I couldn't tell whether he was oblivious or intentional with his names, or if he was just bad at naming. The various issues were mostly superficial, but they all add up.

After I had some time to think about it and write some stuff about it and compare to others of similar ratings, an overall rating of 3.5 rounded up seemed more appropriate. There was no trinkets in sarcophagus when they launched it again, and second apocalypse promises to be very short because it literally takes 1 decent sorcerer not affected by plot-induced retardation to clap it. Seriously what the fuck were they thinking launching it like that?

I was reading elric and the whole time travel world hopping aspect really took me out of it. The time travel was specially horrible since, by definition, nothing else matters as the future is already written and what will come to be will come to be.
Which is a shame because I was really enjoying the writing, the characters and the setting. It has put me off of the whole shared multiverse.
Anyone has any recommendation on what would be a good sword and sorcery but without all the added bullshit that detracts from the souls? like Conan but no Conan since I and everyone else has read Conan.

So I just finished reading Ruin by John Gwynne and it is absolutely amazing. Thanks to the anon that recommended the series, it certainly gets better with each installment and the third book ends with a major cliffhanger. Ill start reading the final book in the series tonight. Overall, I highly recommend it if you're a fan of old school fantasy without SJW politics and many grey characters with multiple viewpoints. There isnt really a single pure evil character from the humans and even the "good" guys are flawed. If I had to compare the writer's prose and action sequences I would say the closest would be David Gemmell.

I highly doubt they have been translated to Arabic. Don't know much about Fantasy scene in Arabian cultures or countries. Probably they only like the one book, Koran

There is an interesting quote from the Warrior-Prophet:

"When, many centuries later, the Sareots were massacred by the Fanim in the fall of Shigek, it was
rumoured that the Padirajah himself had entered the Library. From his vest, the legend went, he pulled a
slender, leather-bound copy of the kipfa’aifan, the Witness of Fane, bent to the shape of his breast.
Holding it high in the airy gloom, he declared, “Here lies all written truth. Here lies the one path for all
souls. Burn this wicked place.” At that instant, it was said, a single scroll spilled from the racks and came
rolling to his booted feet. When the Padirajah opened it he found a detailed map of all Gedea, which he
later used to crush the Nansur in a number of desperate battles."

Second book you already know the characters and they're already in the places they need to be to (mostly) finish the series out.
Pacing in the 2nd and 3rd books is much better than the 1st, as is the story being told in each book, and the story being told in the trilogy as a whole.

>Tolkien lacks a lot in his books, especially interpersonal relationships and humanistic/philosophical topics. His characters read really poorly.
That is a fair complaint from a modern perspective; Tolkien did not write like a novelist, he wrote like a bard, or a historian. The Lord of the Rings is undeniably a great work of art, a masterpiece of mythopoiea, but it is designed first and foremost as a "found document"; it is written as if it were a real chronicle of historical events transmitted orally through a poet like Chaucer or Homer and then written down after the fact. It is meant to evoke The Song of Roland or Beowulf. It is not a conventional novel in any sense of the word, so it lacks the familiar conventions of prose and dialogue that readers of fiction have been accustomed to since Henry Fielding's Tom Jones, James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans, or Rafael Sabatini's Scaramouche, and certainly nothing like modern fantasy.

Just finished Dune. At the very end there are two points I would like clarification on.

Paul is speaking with rev mother and says he remembers her from jabbar and can kill her with a word. I thought gom jabbar with a poison which kills the unchosen essentially?

Second confusion is pic rel. Thanks.

Chapter 16: The Third Layer Space of the Jiang Lan Realm

At the moment when the Cosmos was formed, Qin Yu already knew that he was able to use the most basic portion of the ‘temporal law.’ If he were to forcefully try to use temporal law that surpassed the limit that which this Cosmos could bear, then it might only lead to the cave-in of the entire Cosmos.
“This New Cosmos is still in its developmental stage. Currently, all I can use is ‘Time Acceleration.’ Furthermore, I can only accelerate time to around two thousand times.” Regarding this, Qin Yu was still very satisfied.
After all, even the third layer space of the Jiang Lan Realm was only able to speed up time by a thousand times.
Furthermore, Qin Yu was able clearly sense that the limit of his Time Acceleration was increasing as the New Cosmos continued to expand. He believed that should the New Cosmos reach a certain level, a Time Acceleration by the millions would also be possible.
Qin Yu also knew that the ‘Time Acceleration’ was merely the first stage of the temporal law.
When the Universal World shattered and formed the new Cosmos, the general understanding of the temporal law had entered Qin Yu’s mind.
The temporal law was separated into three levels.

>Bakkerchads and Gu Cultivators are one and the same
They both acknowledge the superiority of an inhuman and amoral master manipulator as the protagonist. Only by removing emotion and morality can the underlying true nature of man and society be revealed. And only a truly uncommon man can be justified to be capable of changing the world to suit his purposes.
Really they're almost the same story, and have very similar philosophical worldviews. They're even both semi-permanently unfinished.
