herbert is a fellow head injury enjoyer. i first read dune when i was like 9 or 10, i reread it when i was about 15, and then in my senior year of high school i reread dune and finally read the entire original series of books. i made the mistake years later of reading the series again and wanting more i made the mistake of reading all the "other" dune books that his retard son had written, luckily i seem to have purged most of my memory of that trash. when i heard there was going to be a new dune movie i promised myself i wouldnt watch it and reread the original series again. it wasnt really until this most recent rereading that i truly realized how much influence the dune series had on me, more so than just about any other book or series, even more than the lord of the rings or howard.

I don't know what the general consensus is, but I actually enjoyed Messiah more than Dune. You should know however that it isn't really a sprawling epic like Dune. There is almost nothing in the way of 'action', like people riding sandworms or planetary invasions. It's more of a political drama that deals with the aftermath of the first book. The characters are a lot more interesting and the ending is kino

Messiah is where the Dune saga start becoming something special. The first book is the least interesting one for me. It has the apparent structure of a typical Hero's journey adventure story and A LOT of focus on ecology (if that's your thing, you're gonna love it). I'm not saying that's all the book has to offer, it has a lot of suggestions at the subversions and change of direction that would come in the sequels, some interesting points on power, leadership, politics etc, and great world building. But the political intrigue, drama and sharpest commentary on political structures, philosophy, sociology, religion and power come in the sequels. Most of those people today that only enjoyed the first book did so because they only cared about the superficial A New Hope tier adventure.

>The convoluted wording of legalisms grew up around the necessity to hide from ourselves the violence we intend toward each other. Between depriving a man of one hour from his life and depriving him of his life there exists only a difference of degree. You have done violence to him, consumed his energy. Elaborate euphemisms may conceal your intent to kill, but behind any use of power over another the ultimate assumption remains: “I feed on your energy.”

Yes, it's important as the foundation of what is to come, but still it lies in the shadow of the sequels.

i hated the foundation series, its sterile and its written to praise the math autist who hates and is incapable of understanding the nature of man and the world.

The audio books are fantastic and scott Brick along with other voice actors. Some of them are are on YouTube but make sure you listen to the Scott Brick version as there are some really bland ones on YouTube as well. I buy them on audible but I have to warm you they are very expensive, but I listen during the monotony of my work day so it's worth to me. Make sure you are focused and multi tasking on something that doesn't distract you. Some person will piss me off in traffic and I'll miss a sentence that is deep. I rewind a lot. These books are so dense.

The upshot to this is that it will usually save you from buying dogshit translations; saw a print of Anna Karenina in a thrift store today and almost bought it for a whim until I pulled it off the shelf and saw it was a movie tie-in print as you described.
Only after I put it back did I think to check the translation, and lo and behold it was the Maude translation. Absolutely disgusting.
