My mother is the reason why I love literature so much. She read to me constantly as a child, and encouraged me to write, giving me just enough praise and constructive criticism to give me confidence. I owe that woman quite a lot.

I remember the last time I told my mother I loved her - the only time I tol her I loved her. It's a joke, really, and a cruel one at that. It came out so fast it barely resembled anything. It was just a rushed noise at the end of a telephone call. She didn't even hear me. Goodbye, she said. She died not long after that phonecall. I never did get to tell her how I felt.

And yes, this is true, unfortunately. I think about it often.
