Nah. The Odyssey would've been a Shonen if Telemachus had gone on a hero's journey to get stronger instead of searching for his dad.

Sci-fi after 1977. Why 1977? Star Wars. Before Star Wars, dry ass writers used the genres to explore ideas. There were no interesting character development, decently paced plots, etc. in the 50's/60's/70's.
Then came Star Wars. A New Hope brought action, the hero's journey, and likable characters to the genre. Star Wars is the reason we have capeshit, and it is the reason manga became what it would become (Bleach, Dragonball, etc.)
Also, Dragonball was heavily inspired by Journey to the West.

I am interested in fantasy with clear Good Guys and Bad Guys, fuck shades of grey. Any recommendations beside LOTR and Wheel of Time.

The Master and Margarita is the ultimate anime novel, think about it.

-The Master is an otaku hikikomori self-insert
-Margarita is quite literally his dream waifu come flesh
-There's a couple of fanservice scenes with Margarita naked or in a fancy dress that are justified by mostly by comedy
-Bezdomnyi acts as the Master's foil in the vein of an anime MC's best friend, even if they never meet in the book
-Woland is a villain straight out of artsy anime à la Penguindrum
-His entourage is a quirky miniboss squad straight out of shonen
-One of them is a talking cat, 'cause gotta have a cat
-The whole book presents social critiques under the guise of fantasy much like all those serious fantasy and sci-fi anime
-There's weird Christian symbolism no one has quite managed to crack maybe because there's nothing to crack

There’s the “Sword of Truth” series that’s so black-and-white it’s cringy. Downside, you have to read a book by pic related.

Series is kinda like Dune, where you just go as many books in as you can before you stop giving a shit. I tapped out at ‘Confessor’

You’re looking for lame ass Brandon Sanderson, OP.

Basically this, I can enjoy schlocky Fantasy every now and then. He doesn't write great prose but he does write with a naive enthusiasm that I find endearing and entertaining enough.

Yep, and then came Flash Gordon 1980. But like I said, not only movies were changed. While Dune was ahead of it's time, very few sci-fi novels were like Dune. Including the sequels to Dune. Ender's Game came out in '85.
