It's not a joke. Read the Illiad, then read the Odyssey, then read Hesiod and Theognis. From there pick up Frederick Copleston's book The History of Philosophy vol. 1 and read it as a companion to The First Philosophers by Rachel Wetfield, the Complete Works of Plato, then the Complete Works of Aristotle in that order.

*=not philosophy but highly recommended
Doesn't matter which order u read these in but the Republic is a good first choice.
