Hey /lit,

I can't believe it myself, but yes, I've finally found something you could actually help me with. I'm doing an animation project on loneliness amongst men and I'm looking for literature in order to flesh out the point I'm trying to make.

When I say "Commodification Of Loneliness" I mean how men are preyed upon with pornography, constant bombardments of sexual advertisements, and maybe even Virtual Reality. I'm personally of the belief that pornography is bad for your mind and body. So, I believe that catering to this longing is nothing more than a selfish money-grubbing act of selfish, opportunistic greed profiting off of man's misery and loneliness that they themselves enhance. I know the sexual revolution of '60s is partly to blame, but again, enlighten me if you think you have another idea or a source.

I know I'm not being very clear. So I'll give you two abstract examples that very effectively conveyed this feeling for me:
?The themes touched on in Bladerunner 2049 with Joi
>Books by David Foster Walalce.

If there's anything that springs to mind, fiction or non-fiction, please share. Do you think media, in general, has gotten too perverse? Itching this basic, dum-dum monkey brain, need for pleasure? How much does lit suffer from this? Has it grown worse or better?

Thank you

Thanks, anon. Maybe I'll try again some other time... The Americans might've been asleep at the time of posting. (They tend to be the loudest)

Also, truly honest, I should clean up my post. It's messy, it has spelling errors, my thoughts aren't concise, it's short-sighted and naive. I can do better.

Capitalist Realism and Industrial Society and Its Future definitely shed some light on the atomization of individuals in relationship to the current state of economy and technological advacement respectively.
You are definitely not breaking new ground though, a non-collective mass of atomized individuals is easier to control. You have novels like 1984 and Brave New World but those are obvious. Everything else I can think of is either off topic or wild conspiracy theories.
Generally if the thread stays up a little while you will get someone who will offer you actual recommendations

I'd say that one of the reasons behind the growing extreme content being shown in the media is a result of the continued deteriorating attention spans of the people of today. This has led to numerous media companies to push out stuff that has more shock value and sexualization due to people becoming increasingly desensitized due to Porn and shit.

Some good books on the topic are:
>Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman
>The Shallows by Nicholas Carr

One Dimensional Man by Herbert Marcuse
Eros and Civilization by Herbert Marcuse
Dialectic of Enlightenment by Theodore Adorno

All social media is based on this. It's algorithms and AI that control what you get to see and not, built to create short term dopamine rushes.

I don't have any recommendations but your line about VR and porn reminds me of a time I went into a sex shop with some friends and saw a VR headset playing porn on it, with one of those silicon pussies at the attached to the base. I feel really bad for whomever uses that

Terminal boredom seems really interesting. Thank you! I've stumbled, multiple times, onto Japanese writers when trying to research this topic. >>19422789 might be, but I still want to read more Japanese authors regarding these subjects, they seem to be experts.

I can't lay my finger on it, but I think somehow Japan has a deep understanding regarding male loneliness. It might have something to do with their over-proportionally up-sized sex entertainment industry, blaring lights, and noise pollution desensitizing its inhabitants to the point of near-total numbness.

>>19422772
Yes! You get what I'm looking for! I shall def read those. Thank you

Not devaluating the other anons, but I need to stay focused on my reading. It should focus on the pleasure and entertainment industry and I'm specifically targeting the male experience. Thank you for all the replies so far!

>>19422782
Yes, make fun of me all you want. I'm an art student not conditioned to highly philosophical literature. This is too much for me, it'd be a waste of time of my production process, trying to understand these books. One must be selective once it comes to suggestions, ideas, directions in research as to not get tangled into a net of never-ending spiraling unintelligible paragraphs of facts and fitbits leading you nowhere in the end. This might all be very enlightening, yet it remains for another time. Maybe when I'm older. Yet, besides, thank you for the suggestion! Please don't take this as a diminution of your efforts.

It's sad, makes one feel like a farm animal getting "milked". Like some asshole is somewhere, far removed from you, rubbing hands, writhing, counting nickles, measuring, clinging on the marble table, and laughing at your cattle-like stupidity.
