I read the first three of the new series: Thrawn, Thrawn: Alliances, and Thrawn: Treason. They're all really good. Timothy Zahn massively improved his writing ability in the 25+ intervening years between Thrawn trilogies. He does a much better job at characterization and motivation and dialogue and plotting in the new novels than the old novels. However it must be understood, that given the constraints of the Disney organized continuity, the new books do not have that same spectacular epic scale as the original Thrawn trilogy from 1991 which was a grand space opera that claimed (deservedly) to be "the Star Wars sequel trilogy". The new books are much smaller and subtle in scale.

The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander might fit your bill. The Belgariad/Malloreon by David Eddings is a bit more mature and has greater depth but with more or less the same attitude.

I wrote a summary of the prince of nothing series. I will post it here now so if anyone who is interested in the series know what they are getting into.

i don't love or hate the series btw. i thought it had some cool concepts but lots of flaws.

Prince of Nothing history:

>They knew magic and were incredible warriors. They lived for up to 400 years. They subjugated humans and turned them into slaves
>Giant (and I do mean giant, many miles in length) spaceship crashes down on Earwa, killing countless elves.
>Said spaceship is full of horrors. These horrors are most likely bioweapons made by some long dead race.
>The greatest king of the elves takes this chance to wage war on his fellow elves, to unite all of the clans.
>The king of one of these clans is bitter and wants revenge.
>The horrors send an envoy to this ex-king. They say their crash was an accident and the devastation unplanned.
>They make a deal with the ex-kin to join forces and revolt against the new elven high king

These space horrors/bioweapons could very likely be insane and are just genocidal maniacs because they are bioweapons with no purpose since the race that created them is long dead.
