There are little enclaves in reddit were people interact normally. They’re often very small subreddits with niche interests.

A really good place to read about what makes redditors act the way they do and how the platform drives behaviour is on a subreddit called ‘theory of reddit’. Sort by top and you’ll find some very well written enlightening text posts about how reddit has changed over the last 15 years and how its model is anti-content.

I don't know if this has been brought up ITT but I think the biggest problem with Reddit and other sites is how you have to set up an account and every post you make is tied to that account, and catalogued so that anyone can click on that account and immediately see everything you've ever posted.
The idea of that is just terrible to me and it does two main things; firstly, you're forced to be conscientious of all your posts being recorded indefinitely and tied to your account, meaning you have to make very watered down middle of the road posts to appeal to the consensus.
And the second is that it's bad for growth and personal evolution; you have this static record of all your opinions going back years that discourages you to perhaps hold new opinions that contradict old things you've said, so people stay in their static manchild mindsets in fear of being called out as hypocritical.

With Reddit it looks like they either tiptoe into every conversation because they're afraid of saying how they feel and being yelled at, or they simply adopt the majority opinion and play a safety-in-numbers approach, whereas with this place anons feel like they're afraid to care in general, and they're waiting for someone to post something profoundly stupid so they can expend all of their pent up energy on them. This didn't seem like as much of an issue back in the mid-late 2000s, though.

Between the two, Reddit is much closer to having the same structure as real life conversation with people you don't know would, which makes sense since it's one of the most normalfag sites on the internet. Meanwhile 4chan's speech structure reflects the general social awkwardness that the vast majority of us have.
