I feel like this board discussed this before I was an active poster
>the prose is a chore to read, is the first half better upon rereading?
>this book had a certain status in american lit, which american books do you find it to be inspired by? Ignoring moby dick, even a pleb like me can grasp that
>is the ending open ended? What do you think of it?

the whole book is better upon rereading. I'll admit I haven't yet reread it fully but I've gone back and re read chapters and there's loads I missed the first time around. It's a lot easier to take it all in when you have a good idea what's going on already.

He got raped at the end. He got raped by the judge. No questions asked. Also if you found the prose a chore probably your IQ is low.

You missed the point idiot. Leaving it open was a lame plot device so McCarthy could avoid the responsibility of describing what he built up in the Judge. What he did was whatever you want, whatever the most evil thing you can thing of was it; if you think he got raped then thats you, congratulations, but other people won't agree with your retard opinion because there is no right answer.

kek, not only is your IQ low if you found Blood Meridian's prose a "chore," but you should probably get your ass back in third grade English if you take issue with a wealth of run-on sentences in this book. The previous sentence was closer to a run-on than most any you'll find in Blood Meridian. Just wait until you discover Faulkner.

lol
If I were insecure about my ability to read, I would have phrased it differently

I mean, the Judge was raping people left and right, bro. He was naked when he grabbed the man in the outhouse, and pressed him against his bare body, he definitely defiled the man's booty hole to death. Only retards wouldn't think the Judge put his massive pale penis in the old man's dirty western ass.

1) I never considered the prose a chore, but I didn't fully appreciate it on my first read through. Now I consider it one of the most beautiful books ever written and I love every part.
2) There are numerous references in the book from Paradise Lost to The Bible itself. In the first page, for example, the child's parents are referred to as "hewers of wood and drawers of water." This is a reference to the Book of Joshua, Chapter 9, Verse 23; "For this are you accursed; every one of you shall always be a slave [hewers of wood and drawers of water] for the house of my God."
3) I think McCarthy wants us to believe the man was raped and killed by Holden at the end. I believe that's the case but I also wouldn't hold it against someone who had another theory.

In my ending The Judge gave the man a hug, and then left to go dance naked in the hall. And as for the men who were absolutely disgusted with the image of the outhouse, they were just witnessing the man taking a big fat dump. I'd like to think the man and Holden became close friends after that night:)

The quality of the writing makes it hold up very well to re-reads. The first time through you will probably be learning some new vocabulary and figuring out what is happening in the plots, if you reread it that stuff won't be in the way so much and it won't feel like a chore.

I'm stealing your ending it is nice. I was thinking the judge made the man rape the bear girl then the man pissing outside was actually OUR man. Yours is better tho

This used to be the only book this board seemed to discuss. That was before Obama's second term though, when the world went to complete shit

A little closer I'd say. In 2018/19 it wasn't uncommon to see half a dozen BM threads in the catalog every other day.
