That is untrue - at times, the games were insular, at other times they received participants from Armenia, Egypt and even Persia. Macedonians specifically were allowed to participate during the time of Alexander I of Macedon, when foreigners were generally unwelcome, but Alexander has claimed that he and his family are AKSHUALLY not Macedonians but Greeks by descent. Why would he do that if Greeks did not considered Macedonians barbarians at the time?

Like many other barbarians before him, he admired the traditonal Greek customs and way of life (represented in anyone BUT Aristotle, who was quite unpopular and disliked in Athens) and determined to ape them. Stating that you are from Crete or Epirus didn't automatically make you barbarian. They all spoke Greek and had very similar customs. I don't know what your sources are (when did Alexander claim that his family is Greek and not Macedonian?) but even if what you claim is true, it doesn't prove anything. I don't think it was uncommon for royal families to rule in places other than their home kingdom.
