Scrivener.
It is native to mac os -- being written especially for it -- and I own a mac. However, I have only used it for my one project that requires extensive outlining of a non-linear subject presentation, and so I have no idea how good it is for screenplays, plays, novels, or prose.
I also have no idea how well it ports to Linux distros or Windows.
I should also say I use a very old mac, so I don't know how the Big Sur and later versions perform.

Word is not a creative platform. It has no native organizational tools or databases.
Outline view is a joke.

Vim. One of the very few programs even remotely as flexible as pen and paper.

You keep using that hammer and nails, handsaw, handdrill, chisel and screwdriver while I use my nailguns chopsaw, tablesaw, multisaw, router and drilldriver champ.

I use TreeLine.
It's a very flexible outline editor.
It's also free and open-source.

Fairly rare I use nails, tend to stick to proper joinery. Cutting joints by hand is generally quicker unless you have a good number of the same joint to do, no jigs to setup, no test cuts, just scribe a few lines, saw, chisel, fit the joint. There are also a fair number of things which can not be done with power tools sanely and I enjoy these details that are not seen everyday. I do sometimes miss the surface planer and a nice big bandsaw would be nice for resawing, but I would be stuck inside, with hand tools I can grab my saw bench and the needed tools and setup out in the sun, listening to the birds and the lake instead of the tools.

If any of /wwg/ happens in here, old OP says hi, hope you still got the general going.

While I love the power of emacs, I really hate the stacked commands, can not get used to them.

Emacs. It's more configurable than Scrivener, can be used to replicate the functionality of scrivener; is more powerful than Word for its search, replace, formatting; is an enduring text editor and it's free.

I use Focus Writer because I can use pretty backgrounds that help me get in the mood. I don't see a reason to use something like Scrivener. I have thoughts to organise and store everything.
