The more I think about it, the more I feel like The Iliad is the peak of fantasy literature; at its core, its a deeply human story about rage, sacrifice, and honor, set in a world where the gods themselves are deeply involved in human affairs, demigods face off against one another, and monsters are very common.

Alright I finally caught up to Cradle. Started off alright with the typical underdog story but there's no payoff with the protagonist as a character. In an effort to keep the protagonist "humble" the author makes him act like a retarded pushover who lets people that are literally ants compared to him just walk all over him. Also the romance between the protagonist and the female lead kind of feels unearned but it's barely a plot point so I can ignore that. But the overall plot becomes a bit of a mess and the powerlevels start going full DBZ which I'm not really a fan of.

For scifi writers on here, how tf do you write something without accidently plagerizing other books? I assume its a little more forgiven in scifi as a lot of terms and ideas are borrowed but its hard to reword things constantly. I just want to call a warpgate a fucking warpgate but I dont want to be derivative lmao.

That's what happens when you have westerner trying to write a chink story with a western mindset. Lindon isn't allowed to have pride in his power because arrogance is seen as villainous trait. So he has to stay a pathetic pushover who lets everyone treat him like a bitch. If a chinese person wrote the previous book then Lindon would have humiliated his family and the rest of the valley for still looking down on him. He also would have beat the everloving shit out of Jai Long for acting like a cocky faggot even though Lindon is in another league at this point.

No prob. Do you like reading fantasy as well? Cuz I have some need for some suggestions for writing as well. Any anon that wants to jump in is welcone

I love writing fantasy because I can make the world suit my story, if that makes sense. I also enjoy magic but I don't have a super hard boner for intricate magic systems. If it adds to the story, I'm all for it.

That being said, this means that my world building is not exactly at the forefront. Is this a plus or a negative for you guys? I love world building but I just feel that focusing too much on "look how cool and badass this shit is" can be detrimental to the pacing and ends up reading like pulp. Is there a way you guys prefer your world building? Some things that could make it more subtle instead of getting info dumped?

I'm reading World of Ice and Fire and I'm really enjoying all this whimsical world building. I loved Game of Thrones and the wonderful fantasy world it presented, and fell out of love with Clash of Kings, which immediately set out to deconstruct everything and make Westeros much more dreary and dark. I know that was the point, but I didn't much care for that concept.

So can you guys recommend me stories that are similar to ASOIAF but don't go full ow the edge? Stories of medieval fantasy politics with dragons and castles that aren't as dour as ASOIAF became after the first book.

I really liked the short stories. Only read the first of the main series. I didn't like it as much. The whole racism theme just wasn't done with particular depth, and the whole problem of engagement wasn't either. I feel like the Quite American did a similar theme way better.

Not that fantasy has to have huge literary merit to work, but then the world and characters didn't grab me particularly either.

>>19309279
I loved the games. It is a very rare game I actually finish. W3 was the only open world game I ever finished although I did play a lot of New Vegas and liked that. Much better than Skyrim, just a much more immersive world and better story. I will say the DLC was way better than the main game. If you don't have time for a long game I would just start with Hearts of Stone and go from there. If you like that, Blood and Wine is good too and then the main game definitely is worth playing through the Crones arc.

I like all of those quite a bit too.

In terms of other genre fiction I'd put on the same level there is Revelation Space and Prince of Nothing.

Revelation Space I actually didn't think the main story was quite so good. Chasm City and The Prefect, which are stand alone books in the same universe, are excellent though.

Prince of Nothing is amazing but the second series is a bit rougher, with some slow parts, although the final book picked up again.

Although more just fun reads and of less literary value, I thought the Black Company and Red Rising we're excellent. Black Company is great for the first two books, then really nosedives in quality, but the first two are a lot of fun. Red Rising starts off pretty weak having been edited into YA and having a sort of silly plot device that strain credulity, but picks up pretty quickly. The first book isn't bad, it's like a spin on Hunger Games meets Ender's Game, but it isn't great either.

I thought the first three Game of Thrones books were pretty good too although they needed editing too. Didn't like them as much as the aforementioned, Dune, Hyperion, etc. though.

The Wall of Storms, The Dandelion Dynasty #2 - Ken Liu (2016)
With this second book, this series is establishing itself as my second favorite fantasy series, behind only A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones). It's to be seen whether it can maintain that distinction over all four books. I don't know how many others would be able to say the same though. Should you read this? You may as well try. The author has labeled this series as "silkpunk", though I'd also call it science fantasy, with a particular focus how science works in this fantasy world. As with the first book, various technologies are developed and described in detail. This may be off-putting for general fantasy readers. I found their usage ingenious and uncommon which led to a rather unconventional form of warfare.

The first third of the novel is relatively peaceful and filled with philosophical musings of all sorts. It examines society, the people, and their institutions in detail. I found it surprisingly relatable to modern concerns. Many of the ideas found in the author's short fiction are represented here. I found it particularly interesting how the gods in this setting respond to worship. They're who they're believed to be and are geographically bound. I wouldn't have minded if the entire novel had continued as such. The latter half of the novel is war. The war differs rather a lot from how it was conducted it in the first book, as this time it's a foreign invasion. Much time is spent trying to understand the other side as well. A significant portion is the actual warfare itself. No one is safe. Anyone can die. A character notes that any piece can be sacrificed if doing so will bring about victory. The rest of the series seems that it will continue from the idea of the invasion, which isn't what I would prefer, but will still probably be immensely enjoyable.

The book has its problems as well, though they weren't enough to detract from my overall enjoyment in any meaningful way. At times the plot, especially near the end, relies too much on coincidence to set up narrative tension for future plot lines. It was also questionable that the climatic action at the end is interspersed with flashbacks of how a specific technology was developed. There are various other concerns, but again, nothing that mattered much to my personal enjoyment. I had put off reading this until it was much close to the release of the third book, so that there would be less chance of me forgetting much. Whenever I experience something so emotionally powerful, it takes me a while to recover, so I have to account for that as well. Maybe waiting until all the books were released would be better, but that's not something I'm capable of doing when I've enjoyed myself so much.

Do you think there's enough here to be spun up into a novel, with this short story serving as the introductory chapter?

I wanted to tell a story in 3 interweaving plots:

1) the main plot is Moe gets sent planet-side with marines and a computer scientist noncombatant to get some weather data during a planetary invasion -- without the data, the fleet cannot risk bombarding targets because of how close they are to the civilians they are trying to rescue. everything takes a turn for the worse, and on the way to their goal, Moe and the naive sailor have to lead a procession of stranded resistance fighters and civilians to safety behind enemy lines. The whole story draws allusions to the book of Exodus, as the civilians have been surviving for 40 years on the run, with the promise that the Fleet will one day return to rescue them. Moe Sabowicz -- Moe S. -- Moses. Moe is experienced but initially detests the survivors and the total shitshow foisted upon him by his commanders. he occasionally leaves the survivors to climb a hill and pray to god (talk to Admiral Halsey on the radio). They are guided by pillars of bomb smoke and napalm fire from airstrikes to clear their path to escape.

2) the battle in space for the planet. The planet was over run and lost to the enemy 40 years ago. the Navy's star admiral, Halsey, leads the operation personally. The planet is of little strategic value, but Halsey has made a pact to rescue any survivors he can. He is under tremendous pressure -- The long awaited re-invasion of earth (their D-Day) is imminent, and he was only permitted the operation by the Prime Minister if he can accomplish with an acceptable number of casualties. If this operation goes sideways, he will be ordered to abort. If he takes too many losses on the way out, they could lose the war itself

3) The captain of the Battlecruiser Cuyahoga. his ship was sent to intercept an incoming enemy cruiser early on in the battle. The enemy is destroyed but they have taken tremendous damage in the process. while the previous part is more generically scifi high-seas Naval warfare, this part deals with open space and orbital mechanics as they have to get creative and Apollo-13 their way back around a moon to a safe orbit with the rest of the fleet for repairs. They come back just in time to save the day in the end.

The core theme here is the importance of religious-like hope in the face of sheer pessimism -- taking the white pill, even if the black pill looks like truth

yay or nay?

I'm trying to think of a case where this isn't true. All I'm coming up with is Matilda by Roald Dahl, but he's kind of in his own category and its just one of his many books. But Steven King also has a lot of books and your rule holds true.
Is Roald Dahl actually a tranny? I don't think so, but I don't know anymore. Maybe he's the exception that proves the rule.

The ships scenes were clear, and certainly interesting (I liked what you did with the orbital mechanics especially). But if your planning for them to 'stand out', a bit more work could be done with it - otherwise its good as is.

Its ashame your story hasn't gotten more attention anon, because what you have here is definitely great. Glad I could help :)

> The serialized version was expanded, reworked, and submitted to more than twenty publishers, each of whom rejected it. The novel, Dune, was finally accepted and published in August 1965 by Chilton Books, a printing house better known for publishing auto repair manuals.

>> No.19313416

>>19313405
>Dune was first published by Analog magazine as two serialized stories, Dune World and Prophet of Dune. Soon after, Herbert pushed to get it released as a standalone book, but it was rejected by 20 publishers, most of whom said it was slow-paced and overly confusing—though eventual Tor Books founder Tom Doherty was an early champion, he couldn’t convince his bosses at Simon & Schuster to acquire it (he did eventually work as Herbert’s publisher at Ace Books). Herbert persisted, and was finally contacted by Sterling Lanier, editor at Chilton Books, a well-established publisher known for its business-to-business magazines and automotive manuals. Lanier wanted to take a chance with a fiction release, and Dune looked like a great book to start with. Herbert joked that they might rename the book How to Repair Your Ornithopter to better fit with their catalogue.
