i have a theory that the world is so ugly and well-greased these days that it turns people off from things like literature. it has no clear place in our time. like even the edgiest, most depraved beckett or burroughs or piss-soaked bataille piece is more beautiful as a piece of art than the modern identikit novel about depressed young person x in big city y who 'scrolls twitter' on their 'phone' and 'interns' at company z, etc. plus, our day-to-day reality is so bogged down by brands and recycled popular culture (in a way it wasn't only 50-60 years ago) that typing many things out just seems absurd and just doesn't scan as literature, but writing *around* them makes you look like a coward and/or a pseud. it's an impossible situation. maybe i'm just a crank

You said yourself OP that they're reading romance and YA novels, which is generally speaking propagandist trash or at the very least lowbrow, and could be done away with when considering what is read at all. Meanwhile the works of authors like Shakespeare and Hume are being censored by these very same women and fags, preventing well-read or well-to-do individuals from having access to said literature. In fact it could be easier to say that, despite appearances, they cause everyone as a whole to read less than than they do driving the hobby themselves. Like everything else you've mentioned or haven't, they don't dominate the art form, they destroy it.

You pretty much need to chance into being a reader (come from a family of people who like to read a lot) or force yourself into it in later life. The whole idea of sitting down in silence for an hour+ and just... reading some book is very out of fashion. To be completely fair, we shouldn't be too harsh on people. Our entire society is structured around ease and pleasure. Why spend hours silently reading when you have a computer (with access to literally endless entertainment wielded by a series of AIs all designed to addict you) in your pocket? We're only human.

Reading will give rise to thoughts and some level of introspection will be prompted. Modern man is notoriously out of tune with his own self, and therefore anxiously avoids any road he instinctively feels leads into dark and unknown places.

most books suck, women like to read to give off an intellectual vibe and be trendy and interesting and they like to read bland nonchallenging shit to fill their days with simple emotions and easy ideas, men are only valued by society by what they can provide so they usually do other stuff with their focus and energy, and those who do read for pleasure are usually losers of some kind, thus benefitting of that existential mix that makes them dive deeper than ya or best sellers since unlike women they're not just reading out of some trend or to pur on a facade but out of their own interest, hence reading niche books or classics and not making up a significant market or discussion niche
