Books on taboo subjects are read because they are taboo. Reading a book on such things is a way for a culture to acknowledge and explore the taboo without enacting it. It is a recognition in sublimated form of the darker side of humanity and allows writers to tap into deep fears. Any worthwhile culture will have lots of literature about these taboos as taboos: not as ordinary or acceptable scenarios.
If those subjects disappear from literature it suggests the fascination for the taboo is weakening and that can only be because the taboo itself is weakening. Subjects like incest or pedophilia might crop up but without the aura of the taboo they become indifferent material similar to basic genre tropes. Culture then becomes incapable of thinking through and expressing these subjects in a literary and sublimated form. People then pretend they and the fascination exercised by what was formerly taboo don't exist (denial of reality) or they enact them in their real desires and fantasies (porn and mass culture).
The absence of the taboo in literature is far more concerning than the presence of the taboo. It means literature is no longer about anything serious and it implies that things like incest or pedophilia are less taboo than they were. You know who you can thank for both of those things.
