Yeah, I enjoyed the Opium War one. Nice and short, but covers the period quite well. It’s also unbiased, which is rare for a relatively new book about the British empire of colonialism. (Written by Julia Lovell if you’re interested).

I got The Life of Muhammad yesterday, so I have no idea what the quality of that might be. Haven’t even had a good look at it yet.

I do already have some Prus, Reymont, Żeromski, Witkiewicz, Gombrowicz and more Sienkiewicz to read still, and a very long list of Polish books and authors that I'd like to read at some point so yeah. Anything in particular you recommend I read? I've been thinking of buying Pałuba by Irzykowski next, but that ones really fuckin pricey, might have to wait for a pay rise before I can justify getting that one.

>Romanland
Study on ethnicity in Byzantium. The authors main point is that the people in Byzantium did have an ethnic identify just like a modern one which they beloved they were. This ethnic identity being Roman. He goes over the attitudes and labels of Greek, the putting of any ethnicity other than Roman on individuals without considering their actual identity and what reason the people themselves may have done it, if Byzantium was truly an Empire (a state with multiple ethnicities living within it).

It was a pretty fun book and I really enjoyed it.

>A King Alone
One of my absolute favourites. Maybe a slight dip in quality after the climax of the action and the narrative is moved forward a few years, but the ending is incredible and you can read the whole book in just a few hours so that dip in quality doesn't take up much of your time. Probably best to read this in the peak of winter, especially if you get snow wherever you live. Should really read another of Giono's works in the near future, or at least re-read this one.

>A Tramp Abroad
Pretty comfy and comical travel writing about 19th century Europe. The slight persona Twain puts on as the narrator, makes for a very pleasant and humourous companion as you make your way through the book. It's a sequel of sorts to The Innocents Abroad, so maybe it'd be good to read that before, though I obviously haven't.

You probably know more about Polish literature than me, Anon. Personally I've been interested in it ever since I read Gombrowicz as he has become one of my favorite writers. I'm looking for a copy of Trans – Atlántico (not sure what the Polish name is, sorry) now as Piglia once said it was the best Argentinian novel of the XXth century lol. I've just gotten a copy of Tokarczuk and been thinking of buying Mickiewicz' Forefather's eve too, but it's also really expensive. Other than that I'm just waiting to have some more free time to take a deep dive into the country's literature; I didn't know about some authors you mentioned, I'll check em out.

He just hits all the right spots I look in a weiter. Light surrealism and absurdism, playfulness, a representation of the world that just feels odd for whatever reason. The translation into Spanish of Ferdydurke is also amazing and adds another layer of verbal playfulness to the book. I liked Kosmos and his short stories but they don't compare. Hope you enjoy him, I'd love to read him im polish. I'm looking into getting his diary too.
Seeing you're Polish, and in the spirit of dialogue between nations, I recommend you Sergio Pitol. He's who introduced Polish literature into Mexico and the Spanish language, and I think he's finally being translated into other languages.

Alright cheers boss, seems like he should, at least in theory, tick a lot of boxes for me too. I flicked through Ferdydurke a little bit when I first got it and I really like these two little lines he puts right at the end of it, seems like a much more playful writer than his reputation in Poland would have you believe. And I'll most certainly read Pitol at some point, never heard of him before, but he seems mighty interesting, so thank you very much for the rec.

Yes. They're the Fagles translation which is probably the most popular (it's also the translation used in the penguin classics edition, for example), though some people are not a fan of it. seems like you picked up random stuff from the canon of any genre and era. Pro tip: don't just read shit from /lit/ charts. Just pick up whatever seems interesting by its own content. See what time periods, locations or genres have the most interesting premises and go from there. If you like a book check out the authors' other works or writers that have a similar background, theme or whatever else (e.g. faulkner -> other southern writers etc.).
Reading all of this canon shit just so you can say that you read le classics is stupid, don't do that. Digging deeper into specific categories is better than scratching the whole surface, especially because the former invokes a sort of passion while the latter will just feel like a chore in the long run.

thats not what these threads are for.
battlestations, shelf threads, collection threads, etc are for getting new ideas to improve your own shit, asking for recommendations giving recommendations, criticisms and to spark discussion on anything related. its not solely to talk about the actual content of a specific book in a shelf of potentially hundreds you retard, unless someone specifically asks about a particular book, in which case they are probably considering buying it for themselves.

you are projecting vanity on us all, probably because your own shelf is shit or you can't afford to make one anyway

The Novel of the White Powder: I read it back in 2008, it was part of an anthology I had to read for school. I thought it was great and I don't know why I was sure it was written by Horacio Quiroga, maybe I saw some similarities between Machen's story and The Feather Pillow.
A Fragment Of Life: I love this story, I don't know why because it's very mundane, almost autobiographical. I really liked how little by little the characters pierce the veil of reality, how things start to take a fantastical turn.

The work of Algernon Blackwood, he is really good at setting the atmosphere. And I really liked the first novella of The Rim of Morning (William Sloane), the story itself relies on the atmosphere because nothing outstanding happens but you know that there's something intrinsically wrong with one of the characters.
Early gothic fiction (pic related) is more about the atmosphere, the sublime, but they tend to be more thrilling than horrific.
