1. rub it in their nose and act like a wannabe poet till they get sick of it (except if they are schizo, then they will want more, although that is an avenue in itself); use metaphors and shit
2. just regularly hide it (in an air duct or a pillow or something) and ask Jesus and/or some Saints or Angels or Spirits to guard it, maybe place a TABU on it. TABU's were used in africa where they had cases but had no locks... so they just placed an arbitrary object on it and called it TABU so nobody could touch it; anyway, ignore me, i'm from /x/ meow meow
3. use a safety deposit box in a bank or a lockbox in a train station (if available in your country)
4. just have it on you at all times. maybe sew a secret pocket in your shitty backpack nobody would steal
5. use a small laptop to write it (like Eee pc or smth like that) and save it on an USB stick you always wear on a chain around your neck or something

Get one of those fake tooth caps that the cia put cyanid in to kill themselves if caught, but instead of cyanid, put in a small raspberry pi computer or ultra compact flash drive (16 gb should be more than adequate, multiply that by 6 molars gets you 96 Gigabits of storage!).

This way you will always have your diary on your person and when you need to write stuff down pop out the cap and plug it into your phone.

However, imo It’s best to only have 5 flashcaps, and save one molar for an actual cyanide pill, just in case someone does a deep cavity search and steals one of your flash drives. This way you can kill yourself before someone embarrassed you by reading your tooth journal.

They did
If you want to write on your phone, there are plenty of encrypted diary apps with a passcode, some of them open source too on f-droid.
Get a cheap plastic stand and an "on-the-go USB adapter", then you can plug an actual full size keyboard to your phone provided it's somewhat recent (no ancient PS2 shit with an adapter). If you don't have a PC this is the cheapest way to get an encrypted electronic journal up and running.

just get a bluetooth keyboard for the phone, there's a logitech one that is ultra slim and kind of expensive ($40+) but it's really portable
this solution here is what I advised because cable, phone stand (you probably have one already) and keyboard together would set you back $20 at best, and if you write at home it's a much more comfortable setup

I appreciate your help and indeed your solution seems to be the best in the current world technological market.
The man advantage of the phone is the integrated screen
For a permanent-but-portable solution, one could also consider something like a Raspberry Pi:
1. you can buy a tiny screen for it... but it also works on ANY screen you have handy, including a TV
2. bluetooth/radio touchpad keyboard like mentioned
3. you can store stuff on a regular USB stick (or the SD card you can easily take out)
4. you can just throw it in a cardboard box when not in use, nobody would look at it twice

There are raspberry pi mini computers but they're expensive, and you probably already have a phone
If you are paranoid you can get an open source app (and you should because closed source diary apps will indeed spy on you) from f-droid. any computer will have telemetry, even linux at this point, it's almost impossible to use a completely unpozzed computer unless you want to go full Snowden or write by hand. But IMO if you're more afraid of people IRL finding your stuff than Google selling your data, you're still better off going digital.

I only write in my journal/diary when I'm at a real low point, I treat it like a distraction. Here's an entry of when I was starving at University with no friends. Please don't bully me, I wrote it after not having a proper meal for 6 days and not having slept in 32 hours. I edited out a name because I fear the idea of someone aware of me reading this and connecting the dots. As unlikely as it is. Most of my entries are me being a loser, walking around the woods at night or being a lunatic covering myself in gasoline:

Starving, dying, wasting away. It had been three days since I had anything to eat on Thursday the twenty-seventh when I received a call from my mother. At the time I was lying in bed around eleven at night, trying to ignore the phone call [name], whom I have not interacted with again in over a week, was taking in the hallway—it sounded like he was talking to his mother, talking about his course; it was a length conversation—when my phone rang. Both my parents could hear, and commented on, the weakness in my voice, where I confessed I hadn’t eaten for two days. In reality, it had been closer to four, and even before my forced fast I had scarcely eaten much, often having no more than a single sandwich or pouring honey onto my tongue until it was raw from the sweetness. I remember an old fable I once read where woodland creatures were forced to drink honey because a selfish fox kept spring where water flowed freely hidden. My parents expressed their worry, my father told me he, ‘didn’t want a repeat of last year.’
Feeling my body weakening I knew this couldn’t go on. The whole week I had been idle and vegetate, doing precious little other than waking at some irregular hour and dallying on my computer: I didn’t attend lectures, as I found the information for when they were or what they required of me confusing; I didn’t go to any of the clubs or societies’ taster days because I found the process confusing at least and tedious at most.
‘You can do it,’ my mother told me. After hanging up I stayed in bed for a few more hours until four, before the sun rose and got ready. I made one of my French omelettes, which turned out better than many of my others, just to hold me over. The plan was to go into town, eat a large breakfast and do some much-needed shopping. Leaving my room around eight I ran into one of my flatmates whom I bumped into only once before—a tall Indian or Sri Lankan looking guy with glasses. I got his name wrong and told him I was going into town.
