what i think i got from freud, lacan and the likes is that these concepts, especially those bordering on the unconscious, really are hard to verify. its part of understanding what unconscious means to understand that there really is no easy way to access it

It probably isn't a science in the sense psychology wants to be a science.
It is real. Doesn't mean it's true.
A lot of it just isn't provable at all, and Freud's attempts to prove it were usually fairly silly. But, as a way to conceptualise how a human being might function, it's interesting enough.

There are some good recs that you can find in the warosu archive. I started with Introductory Lectures, seemed a pretty logical choice and I guess it was decent.

>is it real?
No. Freud knew that if one applied his teachings to verify psychoanalysis itself, the whole system would fall apart as a cornucopia of projections. It is no surprised that he burned so many of his letters.

Freud was a huckster. Read Nietzsche and pretend you're reading from his perspective. Freud misinterprets all of his influences. And he was hungry for publicity

No, Freud was not rigorous and did not understand the context of the representationalist language he was using. Both Brentano and Husserl had already called him on it when he was studying under Brentano, but he did not accept the criticism.

Freud literally accused a teenage girl of suffering from a pathological disorder because she was creeped out by the advances of an old, married man.

>bro, I've got the cure
>so here's the deal.. you come to me, lie on my sofa, pay me 500 american dollars EVERY WEEK
>no bro, no bro.. for decades.. literal decades
>and then get this bro, you do this, pour your heart out to me, tell me everything

I've taken psychology classes in univ for my out of program credit.
I've unironically had a teacher spend an hour over the therapeutic importance of the large session fees. You HAVE to charge 2~3x the cost of other equivalent services because otherwise the patients won't understand how important it is to respect you.
I am not shitting you.

The easiest way to convince a man that psychoanalysis is bunk is to get someone to psychoanalyse them.

Couldn't tell you, never gave or took sessions.
It seems a very self serving argument at first look. However it's the same argument with car ethylometers. I've (sadly) had to work at a company like that and got shocked once when someone told me the machine model itself was purposedly kept lowtech and as crap as possibly can be, because the real punishment is the rental fees (~175/month) for the machine, and as far as everyone was concerned, government included, it didn't matter if the device didn't work in the winter because its better for everyone anyways if the goddamn hindu drunkards don't fucking drive.

To be fair, psychoanalysis has closer to ties to psychiatry rather than psychology. Classically, psychoanalysis is practiced in the clinic, rather than a lab. In fact, having an MD was a requirement to train in psychoanalysis up until the 1980s. Psychology as a field mostly concerns itself with research, not therapy and treatment. Which are under the purview of psychiatry and psychoanalysis. I don't care about what a psychology professor has to say about psychoanalysis.

Freud was born to Jewish parents in the Moravian town of Freiberg,[13][14] in the Austrian Empire (now Příbor, Czech Republic), the first of eight children.[15]

>can psychoanalysis be considered a science?
Since you can't really measure it, no, it can't. It's closer to applied philosophy. Science deals with reducible phenomena and human consciousness and experience are not well reducible.
>things like penis envy make me think it's total bullshit
Generally, most ideas from any given field during their first decades of existence will be bullshit.

>>19265907
>You HAVE to charge 2~3x the cost of other equivalent services because otherwise the patients won't understand how important it is to respect you.
This is actually true. If you charge too little people generally don't trust your service or product, even if it's high quality.
