Hi folks, do (you) want help keep /sffg/ good?

What's that, Jimmy? You want to help? Good lad.

Gather round, gather round. Now, listen up kids, this is how you can help.

1. Do not under any circumstances reply to Bakker posts.
2. Hide Bakker posts as soon as you see them.

Bakker posters are doing it on purpose to make /sffg/ a nasty place and they are baiting people into replying to them. Don't fall for their tricks. Together we can help make /sffg/ a better place.

Ain't that right, Jimmy?

Fledgling - Octavia E. Butler (2005)
This is a book about vampires. It would be reasonable to conclude that it's a horror novel. Many others would agree. The majority probably even find it to be quite disturbing and a very uncomfortable read. This is a transgressive novel in terms of social dynamics and societal expectations. I don't know if it was specifically intended to trouble others or if was meant to be a sincere exploration of other ways of being. I think it's the the latter, and it's possible the average reader was too shocked for that to be acceptable.
As I've written before, I likely incriminate myself by saying so, but this wasn't a horror novel to me at all, or for that matter disturbing or uncomfortable. What I read was 3/4s murder mystery and 1/4 legal thriller. I'm unable to say why I was so enthralled. Does it merit what I think about it? I don't know and I don't care. What I know is that I felt this was amazing and none of its flaws could detract from it in any way. It had so much to say and I loved how it was said.
Six months after this novel was published, Butler died. This could've became a series and if it had, it may have become one of my favorites. After I finished reading I began mourning. What an utterly devastating loss of what should've been. All that I can do is to give the benefit of the doubt to all else she wrote and allow it a far greater chance.

how come there is not a single lore channel on youtube about the second apocalypse, especially considering the cultic fandom here. i know they are far more popular but you have a thousand wheel of time, stormlight archive and elder scrolls lore/history channels, a TSA one would be nice. is it because its considered a lower form of education or something or is bakker not that popular yet? i read that 150 page history of earwa thing and its beautifully written and pretty engaging stuff, a video form of it with images/fan art would be pretty cool.

Interpreting this as asking for magic school:
It borders YA a bit but A Deadly Education is a much better magic school story. Haven't read the just released sequel yet.
Blood Song is warrior school, good, sequels fall off because of a weird decision to go multi-pov.
Mercedes Lackey has multiple series based around magical university settings, your mileage may vary but if you take to it there's a lot there.
Imager is set around a magic school and a protagonist learning magic but it focuses on his extracurricular spy/diplomat/cop work more than the school, which is a wise choice imo. That's the first 3 imager books, sequels are not school set (but are even better books)
And I'm not a fan but Name of the Wind is probably the "adult" book designed to appeal to harry potter fans.

Final shout out to Mother of Learning which is very long but a good magical school timeloop story.
Xianxia also has loads of magic schools/sects if you want to go for even longer stuff
(best to treat webnovels as reading a whole series instead of one book, the length makes more sense then)

The same way the modern economy works. That is to say, it doesn't, and it continues running based purely on inertia because a lot of people THINK it's working fine, but is fundamentally unstable because a single crisis is very likely to cause the entire house of cards to collapse.
Either that or you could just go the "autonomic market bots run the economy and the world is a hellscape" route, which we're not far from anyway.

>> No.19231128

I'm just trying to understand the concept of economics without trade, no political shitposting intended.

I'm imagining something like;
>Government/King/whatever takes over and claims ownership of everything(?)
>Gives people money/credits in exchange for working and producing goods
>Sells goods and resources to people in exchange for credits
>Prints enough money to meet circulation demands but doesn't print money to pay people because then it would lead to inflation(?)
>Profit???

>> No.19231163

>>19231128
The money is backed by nothing, but more importantly a one world currency is a massive disaster waiting to happen. The Euro is a great example of why on a smaller scale
>The Eurozone adopts the Euro
>Smaller economies in the Eurozone can't compete with Germany's economic output
>German infrastructure lets them undercut the competition on exports
>The smaller economies, if they still used their own currencies, would compete by letting their currency depreciate
>But due to the Euro, they cannot do this
>Germany gets more money, leading to more infrastructure, leading to them having an even greater advantage
>The smaller economies become de-facto slave states to Germany
Economics is fundamentally not a rational function, 1+1 doesn't always equal 2, because a small hint of instability COULD do absolutely nothing, or it could cause a country wide run on the banks leading to a cash shortage for absolutely no reason (Greece circa 2017).
Centrally planned economies with a centrally controlled currency just make this problem even worse, because a bureaucracy cannot react to market trends swiftly, or effectively (because it's run by Bureaucrats).

On the other hand, what you're describing is actually similar to what Hitler did when he initially came to power. He abandoned the previous currency which had gone into Hyper Inflation, and started issuing government bonds in exchange for work in public projects. I can't remember exactly what they were backed by (I think it was flour or something?), but they were backed, not fiat. It caused a massive economic recovery, but it also pissed certain people because he kicked out all the bankers and wouldn't sell government bonds for foreign currency.

All of this is complete bullshit, nothing remotely like this happened.
What the Nazis did was print fiat money through various creative means to fund military rearmament, which lead to shortages across the civilian economy because all material imports went to armaments plants instead of factories that made consumer goods. This lead to both an inflation and good shortage. The Nazis responded by encouraging large corporations to buy up smaller competitors for pennies on the dollar to "rationalize" the economy, and imposed fixes prices for goods and wages for workers. They also made it illegal for workers to go on strike or change their employer. This lead to, among other things, a reduction in the availability of food and consumer goods, as well as a significant reduction of the quality of the goods that were still available. Nazi economists predicted a severe recession around 1940-1941, which was countered by the Nazis stealing everything not nailed down in the territories they occupied, as well as enslaving millions of foreign workers to prop up the massive corporations in the Reich.

I mean seriously, making a big deal about the relative weight between what's being pushed and pulled in mistborn, only to use fucking coins as the main mean of transportation? Go ahead, try pushing a coin, put all your weight into it, and see if you or the coin moves first. Unless you're doing it at like a perfect perpendicular angle on a perfectly flat and hard surface, that coin's pretty much always moving first.

The coin eventually hits the ground, or a building, or something else massive and solid that resists the push, retard. Did you seriously read the entire book and never once bother to pay attention to this?

What the fuck is it with these people?

The "breaking the 4th wall" is a literary device, because the book is written as a a deliberate account of events for posterity, after the fact, and the author addresses his prospective readers occasionally to clarify or just converse with them.

For example
>I wondered once why authors of ancient days so often prostrate themselves before their audience, apologize, beg favors, pray to the reader as to an Emperor as they explain their faults and failings; yet, with my work barely begun, I find myself already in need of such obsequies. If I am properly to follow the style I have chosen, I must, at the book’s outset, describe myself, my background and qualifications, and tell you by what chance or Providence it is that the answers you seek are in my hands. I beg you, gentle reader, master, tyrant, grant me the privilege of silence on this count. Those of you who know the name of Mycroft Canner may now set this book aside. Those who do not, I beg you, let me make you trust me for a few dozen pages, since the tale will give you time enough to hate me in its own right.

Reposting from /wg/:

So I took a break from writing after finishing my first novel to do some AI research. Now I want to take a break from AI research to do some writing. What I want to write is a dialogue between two AIs that I believe are well within in the scope of near-future scifi. Given my CS background and recent research, it would be more "hard science" than most scifi, and probably also more philosophical than the average scifi reader wants. (I'm thinking of going so far as to cite papers in footnotes.) Do any of you have ideas on where I might publish a short story like that? Any magazines that are interested in that sort of thing?

Mother of Learning could've used some editing. The 2nd part stretches on way too long and there's some payoffs in the end that aren't nearly as good as they could've been. Red Robe should've played a much bigger role in Arc 2. All in all though I'd say it was Mother of Kino.

It's just Wolfe without the soul. The chief mystery of the book is whether or not the author of the book is presenting a sincere vision of utopia or is criticizing progressive beliefs. It was more interesting until I checked her blog and realized it was the former. It doesn't pay back what it asks of you. It's not terrible or unreadable or anything, but don't trip over yourself trying to like it.

But the contradictory thing is that she does hold these progressive beliefs and must believe that some parts of it are good, even if other parts have descended into cyberpunk dynastic bullshit. But even the things outside of that are off-putting to me in a way I don't think she intended them to be. Anyways, whether or not you agree, that's really the only interesting point about the book to discuss - that was more my point. There's not much depth beyond that curiosity about the author's intentions for the setting.
