Just started the first book, its pretty comfy and has some funny moments. I’ve watched all of the movies but have never read the books, I’m assuming the former is very watered down?

Yeah, the first two movies are very faithful to the books, then the third movie decides to do it a bit differently, but still in a good way and manages to get the main story across, while the fourth movie totally fucks everything while leaving out a lot of crucial stuff. Five is similarly cut back (in part because it's also the longest book), and the damage to the series is done by 6 and 7/8. I'm not even sure how you could understand the movie series without reading the books, they leave out a lot of crucial stuff for understanding the ending.

I have only seen one film (the goblet of fire), but it was enough for me to not want to see the others.

I like the books — there is a clear streak of both fantasy and adventure, and Rowling has a slight comedic gift that enhances the characters' progression.

Favorite book: Order of the phoenix.
