Ordered from Wordsworth based on this posting and they send me this. What the fuck? Who oversees these cover changes?

>> No.19208003

Based. Wordsworth covers are the ultimate pleb filter. Be sure to read it in public.

To be fair they're very affordable and have a nice collection. It's just that every now and then they come up with some abyss tier bottom shelf fiction covers for no reason.
Though I'd never use a Wordsworth translation, pretty sure their translators are paid in beer or something.

>> No.19208098

Wordsworth has a bigger & better catalog than most popular publishers. It's just that they're also cheap as fuck.

It's not just the covers, the books themselves are can be less than ideal, for instance I got their War and Peace and discovered the print was microscopic. But their Moby Dick seems fine. In general they're servicable if all you want is to read but for what should be a trifling amount more you can find a much better paperback. Look at the Barnes and Noble Classics, Penguin, Oxford.

>> No.19208110

Sometimes Penguin changes theirs too, and the arrival has an unexpected look.
I know for sure they changed Pale Fie and Speak, Memory over the last year or so.

>Though I'd never use a Wordsworth translation, pretty sure their translators are paid in beer or something.
Wordsworth uses public domain works that's why their cheap. They use classic Victorian translations, the only to avoid is their Don Quixote, other than that it's all good.

You have to be joking. She literally redacted the racy bits so as not to offend her Victorian readership.

I just bought a wordsworth editions copy of the canterbury tales. Tasteful cover, good gloss and footnotes, short summary and essay before each tale with a bibliography for further reading on topics relevant to the themes of each tale.
Its basically perfect. The scholarship could be a little more in depth but its not a textbook I guess.
My only complaint is that they don't have similar editions for other middle english works. I'm sick of people asking for translations of a language the could read with a good gloss. Its the best edition of the tales I've ever seen from a regular publisher in a regular bookshop.
