I read so I can have something to talk about when I finally make friends.

I've always liked to read, so you might say I read for my own satisfaction and leave it at that, though then I didn't consider myself a reader. Not seriously, anyway. That distinction came with Sophie. She was not really pretty, but she was the first girl I knew to be smarter than I was, and at the time, young as I was, that was enough to drive me mad. That was enough that every time I heard her voice I felt the sounds of mass and the hymm of God about my mind, and she knew it, too. She knew it, for I could see that mischief in her smile and too the way she lent herself to me: how she leaned herself toward me cross our desks like that was the only thing to keep her from glad surrender. And I was thrilled, always I was thrilled to be near her because her mind was doubly vast and she had two years on mine. She may have loved me, too, the way I did her, but it is not worth the thinking now. She told me once "the duality of man," and that, to her, was what it meant. "Anna Karenina," her favorite novel, and too the key to knowing her. And I read, and she laughed. And she laughed for my struggle because in truth it was the hardest thing I'd ever read, and I did not yet understand what kind of spell would be cast on me by that old Russian whose words could move like nothing else. Like nothing else that Jesus did or any thought of her could do. And her voice, it was like lead to me. One day I found the world was grey, it was the same that Anna killed herself. I screwed it up, I think, somehow. Some way, I think, involving sex. I don't remember awful well. That time for me was a difficult time, and on those thoughts I do not dwell. I do not dwell, but I remember that was the day I discovered the art. The art in words. That was the day I began to read and it was for her. For love of her.

For Christ mainly.
I have dropped most exciting or fictional literature. I will from now on maybe only read a few Japanese picture books in my life.
