What does lit think of George Bataille?

>> No.19199131

been trying to get into him lately but not enjoying it so far, lost interest in his Nietzsche book (might give it another go) and the academic writing on him that I've peered into seem intent on making him seem really dull, find it more entertaining reading those claiming he was a fascist or whatever, someone write Based Bataille and I'll buy it

I think he's profoundly based and that the future of /lit/ is esoteric nihilism

>> No.19199258

pretty based. apparently Deleuze disliked Bataille for being a Hegelian

far inferior to Sade and often tries too hard, but I'm reading him, which I guess I wouldn't be if he didn't have merits. currently reading Story of the Eye and My Mother

Unfathomable cringe of the highest order, and a favorite of people who read twitterphilosophy. An edgelord with a veneer of intellectual gravitas for people who unironically listen to black metal. Whether you become an insufferably cringe Evolafag or an insufferably cringe Bataillefag is completely incidental, and in essence, both writers appeal to the same sort of maladjusted youth who takes a misplaced pride in this madadjustment. Revolting to anyone with a healthy and vital mind.

It is hard to have a French Hegelian, they are all reading him through Kojeve anyhow

According to Agamben, Bataille had a much better understanding of Hegel than Kojeve. I am interested in Kojeve’s Hegel book though

Kojeve's on my list but might not get to him this year. Not familiar with Agamben.

He’s an interesting thinker, in a lot of ways he continues the projects of Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze. His writing from the 70s and 80s are a lot about art, once the 90s comes he gets much more political. He’s been very critical of the western world’s response to covid-19 and so is not as popular anymore.
