I know the only languages you really need to know. If it's not an Italo-Hellenic language or English, it's not canon. I just need to pick up more Latin and Greek really and I'm set. G*rmanophile and R*ssophile scum can cope, no one cares about Kunt and Dastoeiepsky. I'd pick up another minor Romance language like Catalan or Provençal before I learn those backward, barbarian tongues.

I read some languages I can't speak? I think that happens a lot for people who read other languages, because there's generally a pretty big gap between how books are written and how people actually speak and act, and that gap is massive in some places. I'd bet a lot of anons who read ancient Greek for example would be the same. Learning Han characters is another one but I think most weebs learn to speak before reading?

Hopefully this doesn't get deleted again.

I speak French and Italian well, Spanish less well and German I can only read.

Currently focus on Chinese.

I studied it briefly at school but later taught myself it as a teenager by reading and using an old book called 'German for reading knowledge'. As a result I have a lot of experience reading it but none writing/speaking, so it is difficult for me to apply the grammatical rules.
I have tried to improve through langauge exchange (which has got me speaking fluently in French and Italian), but even living in London it is hard to find Germans to speak with because they speak English better (and so need less practise) and are less social than other races.

I think anything that requires some thinking and makes you reflect on stuff should be read in your native language so you understand it as good as possible.
I can read scientific stuff in English or German easily but I only read philosophy in Polish as it's my mother tongue.

I can write only in Portuguese and English(since I only comment in English sites), but recently have decided to post in Japanese and Russian sites.
I can only speak in Portuguese. The other languages I have not the time to talk to anyone and so they are quite weak at the speaking level.
I read all books in their original and if I don't know the language, I avoid the book until I can read it.
Recently I'm studying Ancient Greek, French and German so I can read some German philosophers and French works. As for Ancient Greek, there is nothing better than read Homer in its own language(I have read Homer in Portuguese because Iliad and Odyssey were the first book I had read).

I look for french when I can to improve my vocabulary seeing as that's where I live and study, and when there's no french I look for english (although I go straight to english if that's the original).

Since I'm European I read everything in my mother tongue (Swedish) or English if the author is writing in that wicked language. It would be retarded to read for example a Russian writer in English translation.

Native in english and portuguese, learned French mostly through school/media and Latin and West Frisian mostly own my own. I started learning Russian but couldn't get any classes in it this semester and don't think it would be wise to deal with learning three languages at once. If i can't read a language, I'll get a translation into English, it's definitely the language I'm best at.

yes slovene and macedonian are distinct enough from all 4 standard serbocratian dialects to be their own languages, even though theyre still very mutually understandable. i think you may be mixing some things up, the discussion is not if slovene is different enough, that discussion was 100 years ago, the current issue lies between "croatian", "serbian", "montenegrin" and "bosnian/bosniak" and that thing is a huge politically motivated nationalist meme, especially since all these "standard languages" are in the serbocroatian shtokavian dialect.

idk how much you know about the topic but there are 3 dialects to """serbocroatian""", shtokavian, kajkavian and chakavian. all 4 official languages with their own names spoken accross serbia, croatia, montenegro and BiH are actually variations of shtokavian. kajkavian and chakavian are only spoken in parts of croatia, kajkavian is also very similar to slovene. so basically standard croatian is by faaaar more similar to standard serbian(bosnian,etc.) than to other croatian dialects for example.

but its going to stay like this for a while at least, the war of course left deep scars of uncertainty and tribalism in the historical and social consciousness of the central south slavs, maybe one day their politicians will be able to see past that again and maybe even find some new name together for their mother tongue before it succumbs to further globalization and eu integration and eventually dissolves between english and german
