Yes, they are, on the whole, truly excellent, as are the articles, and book intros. The translation itself is garbage, however. It is a shame that one cannot purchase everything but the Bible text as a single volume commentary, or any other single volume commentary that is as good or better.

I am not >>19155902 but I bought the study ESV a while ago. Can't say anything on the quality of the translation except that it doesn't read as nicely as the KJV, or how it compares to other study Bibles, but the notes are very extensive and there are maps and other documents that let you understand what the individual scenes may have looked like at the time and other context.

Yes, it's more or less general Christian, Evangelical, Mainline, and not Catholic/Orthodox/Oddball Cult.

That's heresy. Satan appeared before Joseph Smith, masquerading as an angel of light. The Bible warns of this happening:

And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14

It also occurred with Muhhammed who also had a demon visiting him, while masquerading as an angel. This is why the Lord requires that we test the spirits to avoid being deceived like Muhhamed and Joseph Smith. If they had tested those spirits, and Inquired if they were truly of God, those fallen angels would have been forced to reveal themselves and flee. Anon, follow Christ and forsake the lie of Joseph Smit

It's definitely Reformed/Evangelical. I can't tell you exactly how biased it is, but as an example it has a relatively small subsection about the role of the Bible in other denominations, like Orthodoxy (including e.g. "what can Evangelicals learn from Orthodoxy") and in its critique it definitely works from a Reformed angle. It does not seem obnoxious about it though. I'm not the right person to ask because I just wanted a study Bible and I'm completely ignorant on Christianity, and all the denominational infighting gives me a headache.
The notes themselves however are encyclopedic in tone and focus on explaining context, etymology, the translation vs. original texts, internal references (e.g. this event fulfills what is said in the OT, etc.) and so on. It's all rather detached and if it does take a specific stance it explains why. Someone who is more acquainted with the theology can give a better response.

Agreed, on the whole. Biased, yes, but it's reasonably transparent for the most part by far.
