Have you guys actually read the books on your shelf?

>> No.19136827

>>19136814
Serious readers have those they’ve read and plenty they have not read yet. This is normal and desirable.

>> No.19136828

Yes. I do not buy new books until I finish whatever I have. If I DNF, I burn the book

>> No.19136835

Yes of course we do. The >muh buying books but doesn't read them!!!!!!!! haha lol
is a retarded normie reddit meme. It's hardly even applicable to here.

>> No.19136842

>>19136814
I read them and then they go on the shelf. I’ll reread a lot of books though

>> No.19136844

it's been years since i read them but i could swear the former was way shorter

I've been working through my pile of unread books recently. Only have Demons and War and Peace left.

Did you buy those editions because you wanted to read the Constance Garnett translation? If so, based, but the B&N Idiot has a revised Garnett if you didn't read the fine print.

>> No.19136882

I only keep books I haven't read yet or plan to read again on my shelf. When I finish they go into a box and I store them in my attic. If you keep books on your shelf as ornaments you are a posturing pseud.

>>19136828
I hope you are kidding, otherwise you are borderline retarded. Used books sell at ridiculous prices; you basically are burning money.

>> No.19136909

>Suffice it to quote the answer which Anatole France gave to a philistine who admired his library and then finished with the standard question, “And you have read all these books, Monsieur France?” “Not one-tenth of them. I don’t suppose you use your Sevres china every day?”

>> No.19136914

Sort of. I'd read most of mine before giving them away to a friend, but I have a bunch of Dean Koontz-tier shit my Mum and Dad gave me that I'll never touch.

Nothing better than a shelf full of unread books to choose from. My reading tends to drop off as the number of unread books I have to choose from drops, I like to keep it over 50, probably around 200 now and I love it.

I suspect most who avoid having unread books on their shelves fear others viewing them as using reading as an aesthetic and not actually reading, which is ironic since the fear suggests that it is just an aesthetic.

Not all of them but over time my percentage of unread novels has gone way done. It is different for nonfiction because reading one book is often a necessary prerequisite for reading several others. I don't own any books that I have no plans at all to read

Am I the only one who doesn't crack the spine? I didn't even know that was a thing until my gf pointed out that it doesn't look like I've read any of my books. It's not like I try to be careful not to crack them either, so is it just normal to pry open a book with both hands when you read?

No. Once I read a book I toss it straight into my kitchen bin alongside the potato skins and dirty bits of raw chicken cartilage I trim off making dinner. The three hundred or so books on my shelves and gigbytes of pdfs, djvu, and epubs on my computer are all unread backlog.
