Define "finer".

Do you mean which nation has the oldest literature? (China)

Do you mean which nation had the biggest
literary influence, internationally, during the renaissance (Neither), enlightenment (China), modernism (Japan), post-modernism (Japan), Post millenialism (Japan)?

Do you mean something else?

What do you mean?

The Chinese are wider, the Japanese are brighter.
The Japanese are more aesthetes and psychologically closer to Europeans.
I have always felt irritated by their culture, as a colorful juicy but poisonous fruit. Literature they also have more in "feelings". The old Chinese (new after the 20th century only disgust me, they are just awful) are more formalists. But the Chinese have always been more interesting to me, even despite the abundance of pure idiocy in literature.
Correct answer ... Vietnamese!

>that some of it has had to be reverse imported back to China from Japan, a good number of Buddhist texts especially
More details here. Source?
I can quite believe that there are some texts in Japan, but they are not in China. But I don’t know what they were reimported, apart from scientific findings.

Checked. Kenneth Ch'en's Buddhism in China. (Wait for a Princeton sale). Also of note are Japanese sources of Chinese historical information, e.g. travelling monks (not unlike how the Chinese monk Xuanzang was a source of Indian historical information). In other words, there are some specifics we would not know about culture, society, religion, and politics etc. in Chinese history if not for pre-modern and early modern Japanese tourists making note of it, since it was of interest to an outsider.

My Chinese history is spotty but I know after Tang they collapse into multiple dynasties until the Mongols come along. Japan doesn't get to that level of fragmentation so whatever Tang culture they brought over more likely got preserved in a colonial way, like Quebec French being archaic to metropolitan French

Japanese, easy. COMIC LO is written in Japanese, and there are many untranslated works from it. I remember my first day as gap year ESL teacher in the Chinese provinces. I made it past falling masonry, over disintegrating sidewalks and styrofoam bridges to the middle school I was to work at. For the first lesson, the principal and other teachers stood watching. Class had 50+ students. All identical w/ bowl cuts and jumpsuit uniform. I introduce myself, tell them a little about where I come from and ask them what other countries they know about. In the middle of the class sat a gigantic fat kid with stubble and monobrow, way older and larger than his classmates, he screams ONREE ONE COUNTRY...CHINER. I suddenly find myself floating above the classroom looking down at myself and the principal and wishing I back home in Europe playing Skyrim at my mom's house.
