I didn't give my kids any "devices" (just dumb phones) until they were 12, and then I just gave them a raspberry pi and a book about python. They program a bit but they also read loads. I think they see me reading too, and that makes them immitate me. We also don't have TV, but I feel that that is no longer the main problem. My kids got bullied for a while for being different insofar as they don't tiktok their genitals to the Chinese government, but that seems to have lost its novelty and they don't get made fun of any more as far as I know.

Nowadays I can't seem to find something that can hold my interest for long. The last book I read that I really liked was Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City.

I want reading to go out of style. I want public schools to stop assigning books for kids to read in class. Instead they just focus on teaching technical writing, SAT prep, and how to write a resume or whatever. I want colleges to drop all non-STEM degrees. I want all art to be completely removed from education. By the time a person reaches adulthood the only art they should encounter should be on TV/Internet. What I plan on doing is, read to them when they're small. Then get certain assignments for them to accomplish, maybe summaries of the books they read, and you know, talking to them about it. Kids (usually) like spending time with their parents, so this can also be beneficial in that way. As the child grows you'll "improve" the types of books you gift, also deepening the discussions.

This is the main reason kids hate reading. I didn't enjoy reading literature until I was out of school for a few years. The first novel I liked was a WoW tie-in. I loved how it gave me a defiant perspective on the game's would and I liked the parts that weren't retelling War3's plot the most.
