Just finished wisdom of crowds. His newest trilogy was such a disappointment compared to the previous 6 books. The only character that was memorable in this one was Orso who was actually one of his best. Joe can write good characters however his plot is always a bit meh. The first trilogy had Logen and Glotka who he will never top. The standalones had Shivers, Cocsa, Gorst, Calder plus all the returning characters as side characters. We might not have gotten Logen as a POV in Red a country but the story is about him. Outside of Orso no one really stood out. At least Gorst went out like a champ. Outside of Logen he's gotten the best send off.

Unironically, if you want to learn how to write women in fiction. Read the Wheel of Time. Robert Jordan was up to something.

I think it was good, but pretty disappointed that shit doesn't get wrapped up like in the previous trilogy.
It feels like this whole trilogy is a second book where he wants to set things up for what he actually wants to write in the finale.
Still, I liked everything other than Rikke and all of the northern bullshit.
Orso is such a fucking tragedy, he never stood a chance. From his short tenure as king he actually showed himself to be a pretty great one and given time he would definitely be able to make the Union great again.
Too bad literally everything was against him. I think the best ending for the whole Union would be if he actually just married his sister and they ruled together.
The way Orso was treated really made me start rooting for Bayaz. Can't wait to see what becomes of Hildi.

Well, to be fair its not exactly a cliffhanger. The main plot is resolved with the so called 'Age of Madness' essentially being FRENCH REVOLUTION BAD.
However, the actually interesting plot threads like the wider world with the thousand year conspiracies and magi machinations are either completely absent or underwhelming.
This whole second trilogy can be boiled down to an elaborate shadow war between Glokta and Bayaz. Glokta strikes a blow and sets Bayaz back by quite a lot such that he now has less political power than he had during the first book.
But its pretty clumsily done since you don't know what's going on with the other magi setting up in the old empire, what happened to Khalul, etc.
Also it doesn't make any sense how during the Union's massive political turmoil nobody invaded their territories. Especially Monza fucking Murcatto, who was described as giggling at the Union's troubles at breakfast and that's about it.
The teaser for the next trilogy sounds really fun though, suggesting Bayaz will use the sneed and break open the walls of reality to usher in a new age of magic and even the return of Euz (or Glustrud).
It feels like this is a bridge trilogy like how Mistborn Era 2 was initially meant to be. Still a good read, but I feel like this is just one standalone spread through 3 books rather than a true successor to his original trilogy.
Can't wait for Hildi kino though

This isn't true for the street cultivation author. The Brightest Shadow is wuxia set in a world where the "chosen one" type is a terrifying monster rather than the protagonist.
Soulhome is the exact same western xianxia genre as thousand li but with a bit of an isekai framing device. It's not wish fulfillment stuff tho, the conceit is that the protagonist left earth went on the stereotypical protagonist's progression journey and suddenly got betrayed at the last.
Now he's going through it again as a bitter old man, trying to work out why the hell he even got betrayed.
Other authors:
Cradle is the standout "western chink shit" series, immensely readable, it's a straight power up story but it's miles better than 1000 li.
Forge of Destiny is a much longer webnovel one but it's pretty good, main audience is people who want to read a long xianxia webnovel but don't want to put up with translated text.

As for Black Company finish the first book, if you don't like it by then you won't ever like it.

The Wisdom of Crowds, The Age of Madness #3 - Joe Abercrombie (2021)
Overall this was a departure from the original trilogy and I'm moderately surprised that its overall reception has been so positive considering how it seems to be that people aren't fond of significant changes in what they like. Maybe those who didn't like the changes didn't start this trilogy or they aren't considered significant.
I was quite pleased with how quickly events proceeded at the beginning. What I thought would take half the book at least turned out to have taken far less. The first book was "Maybe we should have a revolution", the second "We're having a revolution" and third is "What comes after the revolution". There are many past, present, and future events that could be used as analogies for the events of this trilogy and especially for this book. The most prevalent is the French Revolution, though elements of much else are present as well.
The trilogy ended as it began. The first book literally foretold what would happen in all three books and the ending of the third book foretells what will happen if there's another trilogy. If the first trilogy was the past, and the second is the present, then a third trilogy would be our catastrophic future. Considering the escalating disasters over the course of the books, I have no doubt that what would happen in the third trilogy would eclipse how berserk this one was.
I'll read however many books are published by Abercrombie in the First Law World. If it's opened up to other authors, I'd consider that as well, as long as they were enjoyable.

Anyway cradle is good at first but then it gets heavy on romance and female characters, and main protagonist becames lame.
Read reverend insanity, there is no better cultivation novel (RI has many flaws but it is also immensely good)
Also read martial world, it is more of a traditional chinese power fantasy and it is pretty good for what it is.
If you want to reconsider litrpg, read Dragon Heart (klevanski), it is litrpg however it is much more cultivation than litrpg (mind you latest book is a bit shit, I fear author is taking sjw route).
Read portal wars saga (J E Wisher), short books but surprisingly very enjoyable western power fantasy.

I've structured my reading pattern so that I read an actual novel by a published author and then when I finish that I go read some self-published wish fulfillment trash and then back to the real novel after etc., etc. It's been going pretty well so far. The novels are usually twice the length of the self-published works so the latter turns into a nice break between the heavier pieces.
