When exactly did hating classic/old literature being trendy?

My wife pretty much exclusively buys young adult literature and she's pushing 30. I think this is because we both went to a college where the english program was aging white women trying to virtue signal and appeal to young students by making a point to avoid white male authors and the typical classic works that are assigned in high school and college.

I really don't mind them stepping outside of the box, but it's very cringey to operate under the delusion that making a point to patronize non-white and LGBTQ authors wont' come off as a blatantly obvious attempt to position oneself as "one of the good ones." My wife and I were in a lot of classes there together - and this was years ago - and we got into a few fights here and there because I would audibly sigh when our assigned reading lists were always names like "obchungwa kalabunga" and "Xi Qing Xiaolong."

Again, nothing against non-white or gay authors. Honestly I probably barely read more white authors than non-white, and that's likely just because white authors are a lot more common and easier to come by in America.

I'm bringing all of this up because last night, I started reading The Chrysalids, and my wife snickered at me when I showed her what I was reading on my kindle. I asked her what was funny, and she asked, "Isn't that book like, really old?" So I just said "You wouldn't like it because it isn't for babies" and that started another fight. By the way, she was reading her 1000th book about a very unique and special teen girl who's queer and too cool for her friends at school but also very weird and awkward in an endearing way because of her trauma.

Pic unrelated it's the only image I have saved on this OS for some reason

the more likely answer is that she just likes YA because its accessible, dramatic, and fantastical. similar to why women love greys anatomy, the office, real housewives, etc.
whats more peculiar is how people like that don't get burned out on the same dry and literal prose.

I have never understood the trying to push the POC & LGBT+ agenda in literature. I understand that in other forms of media there is a bias based on how the portrayor looks/who they like, but there certainly isn't one in books. Here it's nothing but the intellect/character of the author that gets the book going. Guilt-tripping the readers into buying a book because the author is black or likes it up the ass is quite mediocre.

>about a very unique and special teen girl who's queer and too cool for her friends at school but also very weird and awkward in an endearing way because of her trauma.
The very reason I hate YA is because they try to pass toxic traits and personality flaws as quirky, and impressionable young girls try to emulate the characters.

Not sure if I have an answer to your question, but if I were to speculate I would say that it could have something to do with the fact the women read books as a leisure activity to a much larger extent than men do.
> A 2018 survey showed that 11 percent of U.S. women read 31 or more books that year, compared to five percent of male respondents.

It is a simplification for sure, but I would say that in general guys read basically no fiction at all, or tend to be quite into literature, reading the classics etc. Compare this to women, where you still have the same group of people reading "serious literature", but now also a significant group of women reading mainly YA and Coming of Age fiction. The people in this group are well aware of the fact that their preferred reading isn't considered highbrow. In order to deal with the cognitive dissonance that appears when they try to reconcile that fact with their perception of themselves as a "reader", they will try to rationalize away the need for these older classics.

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that literature is not something that is generally going to be pursued by people in cultures where your number one priority is just putting food on the table.
The fact is, the reason schools don’t teach Congolese literature of Afghan literature is because those people have not historically had the time on their hands to sit down and write a book. Europeans, on the other hand, had food security and except for in times of war, physical security as well. They had TIME to write books 100+ years ago.
African writers of classics aren’t being passed over in favor of Europeans, they simply didn’t exist. That’s why you see more non-European authors getting published today, even after adjusting for the ridiculous culture of “diversity” worship. a far greater percentage of people on earth than ever before are living lives where they can get an education, learn to write, don’t have to spend all day working to acquire enough food to feed themselves, etc.

Historically, some of the major shifts in the intellectual class have come from people who moved up or that odd person who looked "beneath" their class for inspiration, this is not new by any means. Most of these people will be forgotten when their movement dies, one or two may make a contribution which has lasting effect.

True, there’s a significant group of women reading YA and Coming of Age fiction, but the majority of male readers are by no means reading the classics. They’re reading embarrassingly bad fantasy and science fiction novels that are basically written at a YA level (Brandon Sanderson, George R. R. Martin, etc) or schlocky mass-market crap produced by authors like Steven King, James Patterson, and Dan Brown. Most people just read genre fiction or pointless self-help books— reading canonical literature is a niche hobby for men and women alike.

This is actually a growing trend in entertainment, you can see it especially prevalent in music and film as well. At some point the vast majority of it switched from appealing to adults to appealing to teenagers and young adults (18 - 25 roughly). It began in the 50s with rock & roll, kicked into high gear in the 80s/90s and pretty much completely subsumed everything in the 2000s. This is why there's so many 30+ manchildren around now, literally all entertainment is adult cartoons and comics and songs about partying and being young and everybody is refusing to grow up at all.

I think that statistic isn't especially useful. Number of books read isn't a great metric. Doesn't account for their length and reading speed. I'd argue time spend reading is a better metric. Good question. I'm not an authority on this matter. But for most purposes I'd say "no", that reading time should be only counted as time with book in hand and eyes on page. My point is that by banishing 'fame' via your own (mis-)interpretation of your own post no one can ever know who the few who contribute even are/were, and therefore that they (the people) were ever 'influenced'.
Do you know what faulty parallelism is? That's what you're arguing for. Though I thought forgotten/famous superfluous, I did give you the benefit of the doubt when scanning your post.
