Thinking about collecting these books and reading them but don’t want people to walk in my dorm room and think I’m doing it for the classic aesthetic as opposed to for their literary merit. The only one I read so far was Skylark and it was so boring.

We do, but book cover art is about marketing, well documented with many books on the topic. This is why producers of hard covers which are ment to last, like LoA and Everyman just use a generic dust cover that is more about identifying the publisher than screaming the loudest. They choose to set themselves apart through quality instead of marketing and the dust jackets are just a way to insure the cloth does not get filthy from being handled in the book store and to identify the publisher from a distance.

And anyone describing themselves by using Dark Academia is a fag more enamoured with the idea of reading than with literature and learning itself.
You should want a book first, than choose the edition. You sound like you want the NYRB books because they are pretty, what they conatin between the covers is secondary.

when i first got into reading older books with variety of editions i made a conscious effort to not care about the look of editions, but as time goes on i put a little more effort in. i can find faulkner in any used bookstore in america, and i have enough other things in my backlog, so i might as well wait until i find a nice quality edition that's not written in and won't fall apart while i'm reading it. nicer books do feel nicer, figure out what you like and look for them.

that being said, don't buy a collection of books because their editions are nice lol. i have the dud avocado and stoner in this style and they're pretty nice, but if you aren't interested in them don't buy it
