Years after being thrown out, the grown men are given the choice of staying as "warriors" or return to the comforts of cities as "servitors". This is thought as being very humiliating among men and many hold the belief that servitors are castrated. Servitors live among the women and are allowed en education but are not married and dont have children.

The whole point of the book and this fictional society is eugenics. The servitors are not really castrated and all the children are actually theirs. The warriors have no children. This is all achieved by the female doctors who regularly do "examinations" on the women and do covert in vitro fertilizations. The matriarchy expects to filter out of the population the genes that generate male dominance, agression and "tribal thinking", and therefore war and crime.
