What are some books set in the American South that don't focus on civil rights, racism, black people, and etc.

Examples: Gone With the Wind and A Confederacy of Dunces

Seems a little naive. Black people and the social atmosphere of the south involving black people are forever entwined in Southern culture throughout history. Even in Confederacy of Dunces, the character Jones is constantly disparaged to keep his shitty job so that he doesn’t get arrested for vagrancy. Almost all the great Southern authors (Faulkner, O,Conner, etc) began writing their best works at a time when the South was experiencing the Lost Cause revisionism at the turn of the twentieth century, and many of their works are a response to that.

But to answer your question read McCarthy’s Tennessee novels, Faulkner’s Sanctuary or The Reivers, or maybe even The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, but bear in mind even these books have some degree of social commentary.

Oh, I know that black people and Southern History are very intertwined with one another; similar to how the history of the cowboys and midwest are intertwined with Native Americans; or the East Coast with its European immigrants. I just want some books that, whilst it's fine if it includes those things, don't focus on it but relegate it towards the background.

Also, thanks for the recs anon!

Call of the Crocodile is a good introduction written by the legendary, but underrated, F. Gardner. It is the perfect introduction to his "Call Of" series (Not to be confused with Call of Duty of course).

Pic related is the book cover, it's simplistic however you know what they say!

"Don't judge a book by its cover!"
