This was a decent read, probably put it over the new anthony ryan which was the last thing I read.
Few notes:

1. it's called the coward but he's not even a coward, just a guy with PTSD. Would've happily read a book about a coward so being mislead didn't help the book for me.
2. Having it canon that your start of chapter poetry is shit is a great way to get around putting much effort into writing it lol.
3. Really well done sequel hooks, tells a complete story but I'd happily read the sequel right now if it already existed.

Not at all. I am just asking for fantasy fiction that is more historically informed. For example if there are Knights let them be rooted more in historical precedent than some Hollywood image, or if there is magic let it be rooted in, yet not necessarily a 1:1 reproduction of, Medieval esotericism rather than le epic hard magic may mays.

I have just finished reading The Eyes of the Overworld and Cugel's Saga and I am in love with these books. They are my first foray into Jack Vance and I love the style and tone he puts into these works.

Are there any more similar to this? I am aware of A Quest for Simbilis, Nifft the Lean, and back to Vance with The Dying Earth and Rhialto the Marvellous. They are all on my reading list, but is there more to add?

I don't have the proper words to describe them, but they are a sort of light-hearted take on a grim world. I really enjoy these books which I have not felt in a while.

It's funny, I remember reading that review after I read the book. I bought it for a dollar at this used book store I go to all the time who's owner always has a great selection of old fantasy books in this box in the basement section of the store. It's a terrible review. Yes, its nothing like Conan the Barbarian, nor was it advertising itself to be like that or trying to be like that. The kingdom the story is based in is actually fairly well defined, it's based on the Greco-Bactrian in the hellenistic world, a merging of western civilization with Buddhism where the culture revolves around the concept of a person's Li, what would roughly translate as fate. Every person is understood to be born into a strictly ordained spiritual fate that they cant escape from. The kingdom is built upon a rule that the King cannot have more than one son due to the fact that their early history was defined by a brutal war of succession between brothers. The protagonist, who is in fact a very sensitive and emotional musician was born with a twin brother and is being forced into a ritual duel to the death against his brother who he loves because of the traditions of his culture, and he attempts to escape his Li by disguising himself as a peasant and seeking a solution in the outside of his palace

It's a pretty sad story, he ends up being drugged by his father the King and forced into the death duel against his twin and killing him in the end, and the his father kills himself and he becomes the king, but entirely disillusioned. today basically marks 1 year of writing non stop and i realized how much my high school education on literature and writing fucked me up.

my teachers really forced in how symbolism and themes were important in a story and how there needs to be MEANING or some moral message; even when i thought it was pure bull shit as a student. i got punished and treated like an idiot until i complied and wrote paragraphs of literal bullshit by over-analyzing every detail like they wanted. it made me hate writing and books.

i liked supposedly garbage stories like game of thrones and attack on titan (up until their rushed endings) and those are what sold the most around the world too.

so i'm trying to unfuck myself and trying to enjoy writing for a webcomic i'm trying to create, but so many articles i found early on kept pushing the same bullshit about how theme is so important, when it's looking more and more like it's an afterthought after the story is completed and looked on as a whole and entirely subjective. i felt like i wasted an entire year learning that i should have just written what i thought was fun, interesting and coherent than trying to wrap my head around some stupid message/moral i knew i'm incapable of delivering because i'm not some life guru or philosopher. i don't believe ANYONE is in a position to tell someone how to live their fucking lives and what decisions they make except maybe their parents.

tl;dr, how do i just relax and write what is fun instead of worrying about the theme meme?

IF this isn't just another shit-post:

The Wheel of Time is fucking garbage, dude. Anyone here who read it can attest to that. The first book looks like a standalone novel ripped from the Lord of the Rings. Books 2 and 3 are the best in the series. You will soon find yourself trapped in a never ending slog-fest of main characters walking from place to place until something significant happens at the end of each book. It's just boring.

I liked Malazan too, but Bakker is superior in every single way.. Read and find out. It ruined fantasy for me.

The gender equality thing is at least not shoved down your throat like it is everywhere else. It’s just kinda of there.

Compassion is more forced, but it happens later on and there is plenty of “non-compassion” in the series as well to juxtapose the hamfisted nature of compassion message.

People who shit up these threads read neither Bakker nor Sanderson otherwise they'd be actually discussing their works. What happens in sffg is a typical "4chan general" effect that could be seen in nearly every general on every board, in which a loud minority of extremely vocal retards regurgitate the same stale memes and derail every attempt at discussion because they seen general threads as a permanent platform to host their mental illness. They're like skin-spies, only being able to pretend to post on-topic while getting a chubby each time the thread goes to shit. Books 2 and 3 are the best in the series. Chalion, but especially the sequel Paladin of Souls
Pretty much everything else by Bujold too but especially the Penric books
Swordspoint (gay romance)
Unnatural Magic (human and troll romance)
The Queen of Attolia
The Ladies of Mandrigyn
Imager has them but it's more "two competent people decide they like each other" than anything. Does make a change from other modern fantasy which is either sexless or 5 povs with one character who has a romance tho.
Imperials by Snodgrass (probably the most complex relationship here even if it is very romance above all else at one point)
If you want trashy fun Kill the Queen was surprisingly enjoyable.
Not really a romance but the one in Stainless Steel rat is done amusingly, iirc it's the first book too. Might find that amusing

WoT is rather traditional, one level of subversion above Tolkien, without much economy of storytelling (one of the MCs never integrates with the rest of the story and could easily have been cut to shave off thousands of the worst pages). I would heartily recommend the works of Brandon Sanderson who has helped modernize and popularize the concept of "hard magic", which is basically the idea that magic needs rules to make sense just as there are rules for science. Fantasy can largely be divided in to before and after Sanderson, a divide which is synonymous with Unrealistic and Realistic fantasy.

Malazan isn't particularly good, no.
I read it well before it was getting memed and it has huge problems with skipping around with tons of different character viewpoints, most of which add nothing or only serve to annoy you.
Incidentally only a few of them are even memorable in a positive sense, several in a wholly negative one.
If you've played D&D before the new troon cliques started invading you'd recognize a ton of it is just Erikson sperging on about his personal magic systems and characters who ascended to demigodhood too.

Check out The Warlord Trilogy by Bernard Cornwell. Might not be exactly what you're wanting, but it reads like a historical fantasy series without anything overtly fantastical in it. Like it has Merlin and other similar characters and they do "magic," but the author leaves it up to the reader to decide if it was actually Magic or just incredible coincidences.
