Is this any good? What are some good secondary sources on his work and, if relevant, his life.

>Just read him directly
Already did, thanks for the input!

Yes, I haven't read it yet but my German professor approved of this, as well as "Living with Nietzsche" by Robert Salomon.

Russel, not even joking. Check out his Nietzsche chapter on History of Western Philosophy.

Deleuze On Nietzsche is actually great, obviously a little colored by Deleuze's weirdness but still great.

In terms of "philosophy", I hope Russell concluded that Nietzsche decided it was all worthless and life-denying, and should be destroyed

I own a copy of that book (I randomly found it in a used bookstore). It's great. Kaufmann promoted Nietzsche at a time when he was being smeared as a figure of Nazism. Without his work and scholarship, Nietzsche would not be as prominent as he is today and the aforementioned mischaracterization would remain dominant.

All that said, Kaufmann did bring his own interpretation to Nietzsche and it's open for debate (it isn't the final word). However, I'll say again that Kaufmann was largely responsible for Nietzsche's rehabilitation and, if anything, people who enjoy his philosophy should be thankful he presented an alternative to the dominant kneejerk reactions that undermined he and other "problematic" (fuck that word btw) figures like Celine.

tldr: Nietzsche was being cancelled and Kaufmann halted it. He has his own idea of Nietzsche's place in the philosophical canon which is open to debate. That book is a good place to start.

History of WP is a great book but it's a survey/introduction. It still stands up as a quick/dirty reference but it's old (hence only standing up as a reference work). It's something you should read as a general intro and come back to later with a critical eye.

Recommending it to someone who is willing to read Kaufmann is a mistake. For example, Russel wrote at a time when >>18951882 wasn't a factor when it came to Nietzsche's work.

Copleston is much better.
Russel on Nietzsche is trash.

The guy who wrote it was one of the first to translate neetche’s work. He’s also a darkly funny man, like an edgier W.C. Fields. If you know what i mean?

Russel on everything, besides mathematics, was rubbish - and even that is disputed by Wittgestein.

Whitehead/Russel was BTFO'd by Godel. Russel's commentary on mathematics is still important (especially his response in the wake of the incompleteness theorems).

Implying dictators got him wrong when they made gifts of his work to each other
>implying all the little psychopathic scum on 4chan are misreading him when they use him as a licence to be douches
He's Ayn Rand for the antisocial and he's fundamentally flawed. All the Jeeves books were an answer to him.

>Implying dictators got him wrong
Implying that's the only way to interpret his work and guilt by association. Congratulations on holding onto a dead meme Kaufmann BTFO'd. Shows you're a midwit who doesn't like to think for themselves.
>He's Ayn Rand for the antisocial
Ayn Rand is Ayn Rand for the anti-social. If you can't tell the difference between ideological screeds like Rand versus contextualization--you should give up on philosophy and probably keep your basic bitch opinions to yourself...if you're not better off by them don't expect others to be.
