I don't have anything else to add, besides these two pages I got awhile back here in /lit/.
They are two very intereresting concepts: Volksgeist and Kokutai. They both show the warrior soul of each ethnic group; no wonder they allied during WW2.
(I have a question: does anyone know a good book which talks about Japanese mythology? I find it very interesting, despite not knowing a single bit about it.)

This is a misunderstanding, as can be seen by the following quote:

He did believe in it, I think. If you mean to imply that he never achieved this transformation into a soldier of national character and rather approached all of it from the role of the actor or the dramatist, then I agree with that at least.

Mishima was probably the last. Anything after say, Martin Heidegger would render this an absurd thing to say. And in fact, Mishima suggests this himself, even if we find the rest of claim dubious.
