Also, to answer your question OP
1. Just fucking write, return to it later and revise it, repeat ad infinitum
2. Pick an author whose work you admire, pick one of their works and copy it. Hunter S. Thompson used to spend hours copying Fitzgerald's works in order "to get a sense of his writing rhythm"
3. Study those "on writing" type of books

Hello, JYB. I freaking love the song you recorded with Rain.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noEhgQ0hI6M

>1. Just fucking write, return to it later and revise it, repeat ad infinitum.

How do you know if you're actually improving? Do you just go with your gut feeling, or do you use some kind of metric to measure if the text is better than it was before?

>2. Pick an author whose work you admire, pick one of their works and copy it.

Dude. I often see myself copying the styles of the books that I've just read and enjoyed. This is definitely something that could help us to change how we write.

>3. Study those "on writing" type of books.

Do you have any recommendations?

>How do you know if you're actually improving?
Well one obvious metric would be if your text is grammatically and/or stylistically sound, but I usually go with my gut and ask myself "did I like what I read, was what I was trying to say conveyed through the text, etc" and if you answer with "no" follow up by asking yourself "why not and how can I fix this."
Lastly, ask other people to proofread your work since they might spot mistakes and shit that you don't even see anymore, this might be harder than it sounds tho

Don't really have a lot of recommendations sadly, since I haven't read a lot of those sort of books but if I remember right there must be a chart floating around on the lit wiki. I am reading the Cambridge Introduction to Narrative at the moment, so you could start there

Also, what's your favorite Twice song?

What's my favorite song from Twice? Damn, that's a though question. I grew up with Likey. And I didn't like More & More at first, but that changed quickly.

But my fav? Trick it, and Feel Special. But I gotta admit that I might like their covers more than their actual songs.

Started writing poetry. Focusing on verses instead of prose is helping me to make every line matter. The hardest part of novels for me is filling lines, like "he opened the door and climbed the stairs". It sounds so boring and stupid I want to die every time I write one of that.

>he opened the door and climbed the stairs
It does serve its purpose though. I often find myself trying to explain in complex and beautiful ways things that are rather really simple and inconsequential. Of course, style matters, at least for me. But trying to be romantic or poetic at all times can be a problem. The next time that you read a well-known author try searching for those simple lines, I assure you that you'll find tons.

Yo, this 100. I've read the books Claude Hopkins and David Ogilvy. They were two really famous advertisers back in the day – I believe that Claude Hopkins was the first person to look at marketing like a scientists.

Anyway, they both agreed that copywriters should write the same way as they speak in real life. So if you don't use fancy words like "equilibrium" when you speak to grandma, you should avoid using them when you sit down to write.

Bro, I've had the same issue. My grammar was really bad before, and it still is. I can spot errors in my own texts right after I've published them.

But I believe that grammar is overrated. There are many people who write great content in broken English.

>>18903023
> I would give precedence over analyzing texts that you like or are good since I assume that you're aiming at producing something good as well.

Yes. I've studied Dale Carnegie's 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' religiously. I believe it's one of the most sold books each year? But that's not the reason why I wanted to talk about him.

Rudolph Flesch, the first person to analyze text like a scientist (Flesch score), said that Dale Carnegie's book is the best written textbook ever – period.

And I have to agree with him. It's the first book that I truly enjoyed, and it got me into reading. I legit couldn't put it down. I read it in the school bus, on the lunch breaks, in the bathroom – I read it everywhere. It was like fucking magic.

I believe that Carnegie is a really underrated writer BECAUSE he is so popular. Maybe we bookish people believe that we're too good for his books. A book that's read by people who dislike reading can't be good literature, right?

I think that's wrong. But what do you think?

Personally I think that, in general, self-help books fall somewhere between non-fiction essays and textbooks, like, they try to convey some lessons as a textbook does through the medium of essay-style prose, if that makes any sense

>A book that's read by people who dislike reading can't be good literature, right?
Of course it can still be well written, I like Peterson's style of writing for example, but I believe that a lot of people who dislike reading but still gravitate towards these types of books do so not for the sake of reading but because they hope to learn something from a specific book or author

I know that many well-educated people hate the book. They think Carnegie is ridiculous. Who are pathetic people who must read a book about making friends? Well, Warren Buffet is one.

Carnegie tells stories and uses anecdotes to prove his points. And it works. He has managed to woo millions of people – including me. I would love to know what you think about his style.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I think that I’ve spent too much time worrying about my grammar. Having the best grammar doesn’t make anyone a good writer. If that was the case, I guess all the English teachers would be swimming in cash. But we know that it ain’t so. Thanks for mentioning 'The Catcher in the Rye'. I think I will have to check it out.

>I had a teacher who is Korean and is actually involved in the exact same group.

Haha. What subjects did she teach to you? I like many religious people, even though I’m not a hardcore Christian myself. I like to study the Bible, religions, and philosophy in general. I’ve gained so much from reading Alan Watts, Karen Armstrong, and Karl Popper (yes, the father of modern science). I think that many non-believers make a huge mistake when they actively try to avoid everything that’s associated with the word religion.
