I'm almost done with Claw of the Conciliator. As a new time reader of this series, I have to say that there's so much to unpack with these books and I'm guessing I must expect the same thing for the next two books and Urth of the New Sun.

BOTNS is easily one of the most unique books I have ever read and I honestly wonder what Wolfe intended to tell us when he wrote them. Take Tolkien for example. He wrote LOTR out of a need to fill in the vacuum left behind by English mythology which was lost to history, fashioning his own out of external influences from Nordic myths and classic European fairytales.

Now, what is BOTNS about though? There are certainly Catholic influences in it alongside world mythology and Gnosticism, for reasons that have me baffled. I'm sure there's some scholarship on his work out there but I'm genuinely curious to know more. What do you guys think?

Also, one more thing. Is the Autarch of the House Absolute (the one Vodalus is rebelling against) a tranny? I didn't notice this detail under Sev mentioned it again in the later chapters. I vaguely remember Sev meeting the whore house owner again while navigating the H.A. and that the tranny said that he was the Autarch. Is this true or is it the unreliable narration play tricks on my head?

I got memed into reading this turd by /lit/. There's no plot and and by and large no characters. It features some faggot with a mercury-filled sword strolling through an xbox huge city getting into absurdist shenanigans and meeting equally mongoloid characters. The prose is deliberately obnoxious, and I say deliberately because the author pretentiously wrote in the preface something like 'man my world is so alien and unique that I just had to use finno-ugric protolatin quasi vulgar coptic to name things in it you know winkwink?'. Protag also wants to fuck literally every woman he meets like a coom-addled degenerate.
