Fiction drives our every day life, and when we seek comfort from the pressures of the world we once again turn to it for solace. Anyone that denies its importance is a retard. That said, the ability for fictitious works to communicate complex themes is more roundabout and gradual, which may be unnecessary for the more philosophically inclined, but at least has an upperhand in necessarily involving interpretation and work on the part of the reader to synthesize the information given to them. Heidegger actually believed poetry to be the ultimate medium of philosophy, because when you read something written formal and deliberate, few reading are required until you 'get it' and move on. However, with poetry one can continue reading into the text and gain more out of it continuously. Fiction can do this, while non-fiction can't, and as a result suffers from less attention given the boredom of supplanting advanced information in a condensed manner.

Our conscious experience of the world involves re-presentation through the combination of the faculty of sensibility and its pure a priori intuitions of space and time as well as the faculty of understanding with its a priori concepts and empirical concepts through the imagination. Then, after that is done with, one personally interprets their perception and its significance. So, everything involves narrative or story to it. Our conscious experience of the world is interpretive in nature, it would not make sense without this process. Given this, all we can ever have is conflicting perspectives of reality. To say of something that it doesn't matter because it doesn't correspond with your reality is absolutely foolish.

I don't care, but he has a point. It is pointless for certain people to read fiction, they would be better off reading wikipedia articles or non-fiction.
