Anybody read Warhammer books? I’m on the second book of the Horus Hereasy series and I’m enjoying it so far.

>> No.18818863

>>18818854
i used to read them a lot when i was a teenager. not saying that to be dismissive, i just dropped them at some point and lost interest. there's a few gems in there but a lot of it is really boring and poorly written shit, including some of the horus heresy books. if i remember right, first three were good, then flight of the eisenstein i found horrendously boring (and i've hated everything else from the same writer) and then there was a stretch of a few good books. last hh book i read was legion and it was also good.
generally your best bet is finding writers you like because the wrong author can make even exciting subject matter be painful to slog through.

The chances of him releasing the No-God series are increasingly slim, in my opinion. I don’t know exactly what the variables at play are now.
On one hand, I doubt that he will want to leave his magnum opus unfinished, especially when I sincerely believe that the next book is already written. On the other hand, I don’t know how prideful he is to just self publish or launch a Kickstarter campaign. I Can’t honestly see a publisher picking up his books now, unless he gets a tv deal of some sort. It’s a big maybe, especially during the current “me too” era. Perhaps, after the Waste of Time and every other fantasy series adapted to TV fail to reach the Game of Thrones levels of hype.

That said, the current ending seems appreciably final to me. It hit me like a dump truck and left me reeling for days. He led us up a mountain only to kick us off at the top. We may be hanging on the cliff for dear life, hoping he'll throw us a rope some day; but the man seems to have moved on, and so should we.

And by that I mean we need to write our own fantasy masterpieces since Bakker has turned his back on writing.

literature is best read in the original language, you lose more than the original structure in translations, you lose the intrinsic historical conation with certain words and their meaning, you lose the feel and the soul of an work. It's fine for trite like light novels because there is nothing too deep about them, but if you read Cervantes in English you are getting a very downgraded reading experience, for example.
So unless you know other languages reading foreign fiction is just not that good of an idea, and people who barely have time to read don1't have time to learn 9+ other languages.

The prostitute (Esmenet or whatever) comes from a lower caste in an iron age type society, she ended up in one of the few jobs available and is trapped in it (branded with a tattoo) but is obviously smart enough to offer insight to the men regarding spying/motivations.

And the Emperor is shown to be a total buffoon, as a reader you're supposed to see the wisdom in his mother's words even if he doesn't. The only thing I heard going in from reviews by women was about muh weak women characters but so far they've been fairly portrayed.

Most any group consensus will inevitably disappoint any given individual. Maybe I'll update this sometime since there are so many more members now, though I doubt that I ever will. The top 10 would be something like this, the order of which would depend on how they are weighted by numbers of ratings, distribution of weightings, and so on.

The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive #1)
Hyperion (Hyperion Cantos #1)
The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings #1)
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
Dune (Dune #1)
Ender's Game (Ender's Saga #1)
1984
The Shadow of the Torturer (The Book of the New Sun #1)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy #1)

Yes, The Way of Kings easily has the top spot in terms of popularity and ratings. That's just how it is. Is it the most read sff book by /sffg/? No, but it is one of the most read. Of the 86 or so in the group that have rated it, only have 4 rated it less than 4 stars and one person marked it as "did not finish". As always, there's no information about those who tried to read it and didn't like it enough to finish and didn't provide any indication of this.

*distributions of ratings

Oops, that's only 9. A 10th was difficult to pick so it seems I didn't come back to doing so. That would entirely depend on how it's rated, so choices for a 10th would be from: The Black Company (The Chronicles of the Black Company #1), Ubik, Roadside Picnic, or Cat's Cradle. The HH series gets very spotty after the first ten or so books, almost all of which are good. Basically after you get past act 1 of the Heresy, things go way off rails, half the books are absolutely unreadable, and a good chunk of the "necessary" story arcs are partially or entirely within short stories and novellas.

That said, there are definitely some fun books in there, just don't expect anything better than "workmanlike" prose.

Doubtful. From what I hear from the faggs on (((Reddit))) since he was a teenager he’s had the ending of TUC mapped out, meaning he’s pretty much in uncharted territory now, meaning he’s writing starting from scratch for all intensive purposes. But that’s just what I’ve heard. But unless he’s some kind of freak of industry speed writing wise like King or Sanderson, but with the same caliber of his former shit, I doubt he’d be done even mapping his Magnum opus in just 3 years. Eh, I have mixed views on it. I liked the idea behind this, and I even liked the way Silverberg set up the four characters, stereotypes that over the course of the novel are pried open and exposed for the often hypocritical things they are. The writing, too, is pretty good, lyrical and intense. The psychological building up and tearing down of the characters works really well, and it's not easy to predict who will commit the murder, who will be the sacrifice, etc. The only real problem for me was that I kept having to check the chapter headings to see who exactly was talking: despite the four very different character backgrounds, they didn't sound different at all.

That's why the end of TUC feels so definitive. Anything that comes after is like you say, uncharted territory. He's basically got to reinvent the entire series and create it anew in order to move forward. Fan theories like
>Reign in Kell
>Neon Genesis Xiuhanni
etc. are just pure speculation. If Bakker is going to write sequels, they need to add something deeply significant to what comes before.

Right now the end of TUC is basically his equivalent of his PhD thesis. It's the summation of his vision, his magnum opus as you say. Where does one go from there? ... Instead of just continuing the plot for crude entertainment purposes like a webnovel, he wants to write something that will stand the test of time. Even GRRM isn't under that kind of self-imposed pressure. But GRRM is a storyteller, whereas Bakker is an artist, and artists can be very sensitive. I can see why he's gone into Akka/Ted style isolation from the world.

All I hope is that he and his family are healthy and at peace.

My thinking is that he left a lot of threads open purposefully to allow the fans room to speculate, as we like to do. But the ultimate conclusion of TUC is, like I said, quite final in itself.
Kellhus fails. The Ordeal fails. Resumption begins. The world is fucked. That's the narrative he was building since he was a teen, the inversion of the Tolkien myth. Anything that happens after salt and butchery is up to the reader. And I prefer it that way.

That's why I'd much rather see Bakker put out a book of short stories set in Eärwa (I think he was working on this, it's called Atrocity Tales and there are four) instead of The No-God. Explore other parts of the rich and complex world and history.

This is one of the WORST fantasy books I've ever read. The protagonist wound his way through a world and never did a single thing. He just stood there and watched everything happen around him. Sometimes it seemed like he might have done something, until you realized he'd been possessed by the spirit of a dead sorcerer, and in fact, had still done nothing. Hated it.

Reynolds is most interested in exploring things related to space travel and related stuff, he is actual astronomer himself, characterization is a second thought to him. You would like him if you want space, however you certainly won't if you want interesting characters.

One of the most challenging books I've read, and one that I got a lot of satisfaction out finishing. Stephenson's got a wildly inventive mind and reading him is like jumping onto a high speed bullet train at full speed.

It took about 70 pages to get used to the new 'language' that he invented for this story, and I had to refer to the glossary repeatedly, but suddenly it just clicked, and I was completly caught up in the world Stephenson created.

Not for casual reading, but fans of sci fi, physics or alternate world plots should give it a try

Tolkien's conlangs work so well because he was a distinguished scholar of linguistics. Other authors attempt it, and they usually just fail miserably. Bakker's names are cool because they intentionally ugly/strange and based in ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern dialects. Wolfe just goes with WH40K style canis lantinicus. LeGuin makes up bizarre autistic words like Iffish and Gont. Martin just uses pseudo-medieval British English via the New Jersey Renaissance Fair. It's all gucci.

Robert Jordan's attempts at conlangs are the worst I think. There are some other really bad ones too in the paperback fantasy world. It's funny how poorly constructed languages/names "age" their work, whereas well-made fantasy language constructions grant a sheen of classicism and stand the test of time.
