NYC is literally the central /lit/ city of the world today. It is what Paris used to be.

Which modern New York writers are even worth reading?

>> No.18820265

After the First World War, Paris was merely a city where wealthy lost generation dilettantes from Britain, America, and Canada could hang out and bask in European “art” while enjoying the (extremely) favorable exchange rate. It was a place still in the core of Western culture that people could live in relative luxury while being technically starving artists, epitomized by Harry Crosby probably most of all. That’s all it was, a cheap Western city. New York today is by no means cheap. It’s certainly not a place where rich people go to cosplay as starving artists. It’s a place starving artists go to cosplay as rich and the rich are just rich. There’s nothing /lit/ about NYC and it’s certainly not the manic pixie dream girl muse of a city that Paris was in the 20s. Nowhere is.

Yeah, you had all these lost generation poets and world war veterans who decided they wanted to dedicate themselves to art and hedonism. Paris was receptive to all Europeans, but New Worlders especially coming back from the front and they were into stuff like Jazz a lot more than other Europeans. So because of the exchange rate, Americans and Canadians that had some money could live like European aristocrats in Paris. So they went there and hung out with each other and the guys that had money funded the guys that didn’t. So all these wannabe writers ended up there precisely because it was an old European capital where they could live in a decadent mansion while funding their buddy’s poetry anthology and having open relationships on the cheap. And that’s exactly what they did.

Paris is too expensive. NYC has never been literate. Berlin is where it’s at. It’s a large city and capital yet relatively cheaper than any other German city of a similar size, and significantly cheaper than Paris, New York, London etc.

>> No.18820394

>>18820367
Relatively cheaper means very little unless it’s enough to really change someone’s standard of living, ie poverty to middle class, middle class to upper class, etc. Madrid is even cheaper then Berlin, so why not Madrid? Objectively, there is almost no real city in the Western world which can be said to be “cheap” and conducive to art, these enormous capitals, which are much larger and more populous than they were in the 20s, least of all.

You need an artists community foremost to produce art, if you’re not the lone writer type, which few can be and even fewer actually were. You need people around so you don’t kill yourself. /lit/ understands this least of all, even though this place by its nature necessarily served as such, which people here try to suppress with all their contrarian might, and is dissuaded by the systems here in place and the people.
You can just as well get a 400-500€ apartment in Berlin and easily earn rent by working 4-5 days in a bar, then earn the remaining 300-400 doing either more work there, being a student, getting money from home.
Moscow is a Russian city and Madrid a Spanish city, Milan a Italian city. Berlin is European and even international city, fundamentally; the same way New York is and has been an international city. The difference being that an apartment or room in New York costs almost double and at least one and a half times as much as the same place in Berlin.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_New_York_City

then there's the fact they're mostly money laundering fronts and tax havens for chinese state oligarchs, saudi princelings, and the global financial ultra-rich. if you take out the empire state building and chrysler building chicago has the best skyline in the US hands down.

i’m an artist in nyc and completely dedicated to my practice. the gallery scenes here are good and inspiring (well some of them; certainly compared to anywhere else i’ve ever lived). it’s a brutal hustle here and i don’t have a trust fund so i support myself in this insanely overpriced city by moonlighting as a domme. i live in a tiny one bedroom and am constantly freaking out about money and shows and my work being overlooked in favor of shittier artists. still i can’t imagine living anywhere else. it’s amazing to be able to walk to some of the best galleries, libraries, bookstores, and museums in the world anytime i want. i’m always inspired living here. well more than i would be anywhere else.

i’m probably going to kill myself anyway in the next 3-10 years, depending what happens, so might as well make the most of my time left here rather than falling into some rote life of suburban mediocrity.

This is exactly what the Catholics refer to as a "life of dissipation". Taking the post at face value, it sounds like this person is living the life, participating in every earthly pleasure. Almost self-actualized. And, of course, this person is very hollow, and consumed by a deep sadness. In this case, we could legitimately attach the pretentious word "ennui", to describe the state. Somehow, it just isn't enough. "Is this all there is?"

It would be easy to excuse the threat of suicide as being due to further and current worldly, temporal factors (covid, global warming, the broad decline of the west). But we all know that those are very poor excuses for what is really an internal problem.

>if you take out the empire state building and chrysler building chicago has the best skyline in the US hands down.
True, and the Chicago skyline as seen from Adler is perfect. That said, I think San Francisco gives it a run for its money (though it is hideously expensive).

Honestly there is no 21st century version of 1920s Paris, because there is no equivalently developed city that is still incredibly cheap. The closest you'll get (at least in the US) will be some mid-western city like Oklahoma City or Omaha. 20 years ago I might have said Portland OR was the place, but it's since been gentrified to all hell and is no longer affordable except in comparison to places like SF, NYC, and LA. A similar fate probably awaits the other 'inexpensive' cities out there (it's happening to Boise as we speak).

And honestly, the arts/cultural/literary scene of most places is pretty dead. The Internet and commodification of culture has led to everywhere being essentially the same and has killed stand-out individual cities. Welcome to the brave new world where wherever you go, there you still are because not only have you brought yourself, but everything you're trying to get away from is in the new place you're moving to too.

The only real escape is a rural, country life. Most people these days are not cut out for that.

> From the widely acclaimed author of White Tears, a bold new novel about searching for order in a world that frames madness as truth.

>After receiving a prestigious writing fellowship in Germany, the narrator of Red Pill arrives in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee and struggles to accomplish anything at all. Instead of working on the book he has proposed to write, he takes long walks and binge-watches Blue Lives--a violent cop show that becomes weirdly compelling in its bleak, Darwinian view of life--and soon begins to wonder if his writing has any value at all.

>Wannsee is a place full of ghosts: Across the lake, the narrator can see the villa where the Nazis planned the Final Solution, and in his walks he passes the grave of the Romantic writer Heinrich von Kleist, who killed himself after deciding that "no happiness was possible here on earth." When some friends drag him to a party where he meets Anton, the creator of Blue Lives, the narrator begins to believe that the two of them are involved in a cosmic battle, and that Anton is "red-pilling" his viewers--turning them toward an ugly, alt-rightish worldview--ultimately forcing the narrator to wonder if he is losing his mind.

Yeah man, I've lived around here my whole life and I agree with that uneasy sense of dread that feels like it's trying to swallow you whole. The gullible people who come enjoy the superficial parts of living in such a big city, but once you puncture under the skin you know there's something evil there waiting for you.

NYC is but not for the reasons most people think. It’s not because of the “melting pot” shit, the “hustle and bustle”, or the tall buildings.

NYC is the most absurd place on earth. Rich NYU kids protesting capitalism. Williamsburg Brooklyn being the extreme liberal epicenter with ultra conservative orthodox/Hasidic Jews beating and raping their own wives for showing ankle. The opioid epidemic in Times Square with tourists stepping over overdosed addicts to get a picture of basically advertisements. World class restaurants with so much overhead that they’re less profitable than a lemonade stand, so out of that $400 check you paid they only keep like $20 in profit. Mass commercialism. Highest concentration of mentally ill people. Blatant signs of a failed state and failed government shoved in your face every moment.

There are a lot of /lit/ things about it but not what the tumblr hoes think

Once you get a sense of your surroundings, you'll have to go out of your way to experience danger. I feel it's why the stray bullet stories are so horrifying, typically they don't happen. The winters are brutal but the city is beautiful and I feel has something for everyone. Congrats on UChicago though anon, I live on the north side and have drove past the campus for fun just to gawk at the architecture. Education aside I hope you find your place here, despite its shortcomings I enjoy it here and am glad I'm not paying NYC or LA prices.

What world do you live in? Being a prostitute very quickly teaches one the reality of the world. 'High class escorts' are usually just white girls caught in human trafficking, and I say this in Australia where prostitution is legal. I used to regularly fuck this one Spanish girl each week and she was a vicious little trollop studying to be a nurse so she could steal drugs to sell on the side. Her words and opinions wouldn't have had a hard time fitting in on 4chan. Once she told me a story about intentionally running over an aboriginal man while musing that more people should do it to teach them a lesson. She had heavenly breasts but as a person she was something between a /b/tard and an actual psychopath. I moved 3 years back and made sure to change phone number and am glad I never used my real full name with her. I miss her.

Working as an escort (male) for 4 years honestly made me reactionary. Though I never had to deal with a lot of what girls have to and was pretty much sovereign, setting my own standards and rules, I cant say the experience was not strange and horrifying at times. At its end I was completely disgusted with myself and what I had devolved into, how thinks unnoticeably snowballed.
I spent almost 1 year in a monastery and I donate part of my income monthly to organisations that try to prevent human trafficking and suchand a few other causes. Its my goal to have donated the same amount of money that I made from prostitution.

I was buddies with a prostitute for a bit. She was really into me because I was an alcoholic and it reminded me of her father (her words, not mine). Then she broke into my house and robbed the place so I had to beat her up. Last time I saw her she was crying and looked genuinely terrified of me. Too bad, I really liked the girl. The sex was pretty good too.

I visited recently bc I want to do grad school there. Honestly, the city is a beautiful place. The architecture alone is more impressive than anywhere I've ever seen. Everything is fucking expensive but I live in San Francisco so it wasn't much of a change for me. There is literally trash everywhere though and that's not an exaggeration. I'm talking piled up trash bags lining some blocks. There is some sort of dispute with trash contracts so the stuff just sits there for some god awful reason. Also rats and cockroaches everywhere. I want to do grad school over there bc everyone in California is so fucking uninterested in not being chill all the time it kills me. Just visiting NYC I felt that people are there because they want to do something with their lives. And the museums are incredible, except for the MoMa which was only exciting for the top floor, the rest which I only passed by seemed to be very shitty "i could have done that" kind of art. All in all it's better than San Francisco but I'll need to live there for a while before making a statement about what intellectual life it has to offer.

New York used to be fairly normal, populated with normal people. It’s not anymore. All of the normal people left, gone to the suburbs, Philly, Boston, Florida or anywhere else really. What you have left is a small minority of hustlers and strivers whether they’re conjuring up massaged spreadsheets to sell a business to some asset manager or conjuring up clickbait while they all support their wannabe auxiliaries hustling in barista and mixologist jobs. Then of course you have the horde, who I shouldn’t need to detail. New York sometimes feels like it’s not even an American city, let alone a Western one. I grew up nearby and I wouldn’t go back. Unfortunately, I think it’s a sign of things to come for literally everywhere else except only the most remote Rocky Mountain hamlet, which will sell out to investors in the end, and it’s still probably better than California.
