Just found out my 6 year old niece can't read and apparently nobody cares to help her learn.

Any good children's books recommendations?

It's over for your niece. I started first grade at age 5.

I urge every parent to homeschool their child instead of sending them to kinder. Anyways, you don't just give her books, set foundations. It could be vocabulary, nouns, verbs.

ah, okay, i thought you were just going to give her a book and leave it. she's 6 years old anyway so she needs basic stuff, hungry caterpillar etc. i have no recommendations.

but i do suggest giving her a word tin. just get a tin and fill it with bits of paper that have words on. sit her down and take out a word and ask her to spell it. give her the tin so she can read through them on her own time. you can change the words over time. this helped me a lot when i was a kid i think.

>6 year old
>can't read
sorry anon. I don't think she'll ever be able to actually read. She won't enjoy literature, not because she might think it's boring, but because she won't be able to read it.
Such a sad fucking world we live in.

Don't have any specifics, but find something she's interested in, and get her books about that.

There are a number of children's book series, such as the gazillion-odd Rainbow Magic Fairies books, that she might enjoy.

Other series: Magic Puppies, Magic Treehouse, Pokemon, Geronimo Stilton, American Girl, Ivy & Bean, A to Z Mysteries, Big Nate, etc.

Ask at your local library, or look around in the children's section: board books are for the youngest kids, followed by picture books (e.g., Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle), followed by beginner (Max and Ruby), followed by easy-to-read (Captain Underpants), followed by Juvenile Fiction (e.g., Harry Potter).

Also there are a gajillion nonfiction books about every topic under the sun, all written to captivate juvenile readers.

As a child my mother used to read me The Moomins, The Little Prince and A Series of Unfortunate Events, the latter of which is really good for building a decent lexicon as based Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler and Brett Helquist include a number of slightly more complex words and phrases while describing their meaning which for me as a 6-8 year old was super entertaining and probably the reason I have even a remote grasp of the English Language today.

It's not over. I couldn't read at the start if first grade and this monstrous pig of a woman was failing me because she didn't want to take the time to help me. She ruled her classroom with fear and would give out punishments as "rewards". My mom talked to the admins and got me switched into an ESL (English Second Language) class. It was taught by a wonderful woman that actually understood how to help me and cared enough to do it. By the end of first grade I was reading at an advanced level and, when I changed schools that summer, I was on track for the gifted program.

All it takes is somebody to care. Little kids can't help themselves.

>Kinder books
If the Kinder suggests that you're German, there's fuckall I can suggest. Try /int/'s deutschfaden or however they call it; ask what they read as kids.
If you (and more importantly, your niece) are English speakers, start with things like Dr Seuss, The Hungry Caterpillar, The Rainbow Fish, the Giving Tree, Clifford, Biscuit, Goodnight Moon, etc.; eventually (and try to steer her interests gently towards this) get her the Magic Treehouse books.
