Libraries seem less like places to get books and read these days and more like places for homeless schizos to bide the time until night. Libraries are scary!

Jesus Christ America seems like a hellhole. I live in a poor neighbourhood with alcies constantly arguing with each other outside, but even here the libraries are calm, clean with 0 homeless in them ever.

America randomly just decided to shut down all their facilities that were used to deal with mentally ill people so now they just kinda roam around being mentally ill everywhere

As we’ve discussed on the e-reader threads, reading a file isn’t real reading.

It's really not that bad. Sure there are homeless people in the library, but if just mind your own busines, no one will bother you. These poor bastards just want a place to watch porn and movies in peace. We as a society have failed them enough already, let them have at least that.

The library was a comfy part of my childhood and I want it to still be a part of my life.

The same reason you see a lot of anons sympathize in some way with Chris Chan. You can be mentally ill and still not sympathize with anyone else who has one, instead recognizing it as something that must be eradicated. Either through eugenics or cures.

I used to skip school and hang out in the local library all the time. The staff would always give sideways looks.

Is this is an urbanite problem? In my small town we have a library and there's never any deranged or homeless people around. Probably helps that it's only a few blocks from a police station, but still.

I live in ~ 1 million people city, the main library is literally surrounded by police and military stations, there are always four or five homeless dudes, mostly sipping coffee, chilling or outside smoking a cig.
Never caused any problem that I know of.

I work in a library. I've seen only 1 possible homeless person in the past month. Almost all of our clientele are homeschooled families, parent's picking up mountains of books for their kids, or the elderly getting their mystery/western/danielle steele fix.

Or people coming just to print stuff out.

It's not as bad as you guys pretend it is.

Libraries expose you to more books. By really looking at the covers, reading the blurbs etc you're more exposed to new books than if you were looking through a bunch of file names. Plus, librarians help with research and local history is documented there.

They keep kids off the streets, and are a space for readings for kids, meetups with authors, language learning, internet and financial literacy lessons etc.

OP here. I don't like reading for a long time on a screen. Might have to do with autism and sensitivity to light or something idk, but that and the fact that I have to sit in a chair and look right at the computer, rather than how you can change your posture when you are reading a book, bothers me. And the internet is on the computer, which is distracting. I've recently found out I like audiobooks because I can move my body all I want with them, including walking and riding my bike. I'm not sure if the information retention is as good as with actually reading though, so I've mostly listened to fiction for pleasure rather than philosophy or science or politics or religion where there can be more significant consequences for not understanding. I'm pretty good at catching if I've stopped listening and rewinding though, I think, so maybe it wouldn't be a problem.

>>18772593
Your city should take their militia population and put them on buses and send them wherever they want to go as long as it's Portland City Council or wherever they decided that.
