All these people earned a comfortable living as "intellectuals" and they were talking to a receptive audience anyway, so even if their work was not for the sake of profit, it would be received by people who certainly engaged with it and appreciated it. I think the mindset that is killing the arts is that creative people are supposed to sacrifice time, money and energy to the wind, then waste more time, money and energy "promoting themselves" (why would you publish something if it can't reach anyone), all at a loss, just because not doing so would "kill the arts".
