In the 2nd chapter when he joins the monks, a part about wanting to be empty of desire and emotion is highlighted and has a margin note along the lines of "stupid, not a real goal".

I picked up the habit from a girlfriend when I was a teen but grew out of it by my twenties. My main complaint about margin notes, or really any kind of notation like underlining favorite passages, is that they demand attention on subsequent readings. Your perception of a book, which parts stand out to you, how you interpret it, etc., is something that changes over time but if your favorite book is filled with notations then you're always going to be drawn back to the mindset you had when you wrote those notes rather than going through it with fresh perspective.
