Hemingway is my best friend's father growing up. There were legit times I would go to sleep over, and not be sure I would wake up the next morning, because his dad was in his bedroom raging drunk and playing with his guns. Even looked like Hemingway.

There needs to be a specific word for that 50's barrel-chested, borderline skinny-fat male body that literally passed for "this is the strong guy" in old movies.

He was athletic into his 50s
Eventually age, alcoholism and brain damage did make him a shadow of himself
But he had a better run than most.
He led an interesting life.

honestly, I tried and gave up reading for whom the bell tolls in sixth grade (yes, I was really really trying to impress people) and I often think about picking it back up. old man and the sea and snows of kilimanjaro were both damn good.

I'm reading Islands in the Stream and I'm 140ish pages in and not really enjoying it. Does it get better or am I just getting filtered?

Islands in the Stream is composed of three unfinished books, published posthumously. It's probably quite different from the final draft he would have ended up writing, and at any rate, is incomplete. So no, you are not being "filtered".

However, because he was unable to finish the book(s), it would be unfair to judge him on Islands in the Stream. I would therefore recommend you read The Sun Also Rises.
